Inspiration

My aunt Tina is an interior designer who used to work at Restoration Hardware. When I was talking to her about this hackathon and the specifics I asked her what the biggest problem she had in her field of work and how could something like the iPhone duo help solve this problem; she told me it's hard to control a design and show it to a client at the same time. Designers end up flipping an iPad back and forth or hauling around extra monitors.

Prevision is the live 3D showroom for interior designers. The designer already has the model from the contractor and then on the environment loaded on device, they can select from their gallery of furniture and show the client in real time what their space will look like. Imagine two people sitting across from each other at a table, the client seeing one screen of the duo and the designer seeing and controlling the other "2" (technically one that's folded).

What I learned

I started with little to no 3D experience; I've used tinkercad back when I was in middle school. I learned how 3D models work on iPhone, how to scale them to real sizes, and how the Duo's screens and APIs work; resizability was a huge one.

How I built it

  • Swift, SwiftUI, and RealityKit, with no backend
  • A 3D apartment and furniture models built into the app
  • Tap the floor to place furniture, and pin sticky notes on walls
  • The client's live view shows on the outer screen
  • Every model is scaled to its real size:

Challenges

  • Huge files: the apartment had about 3 million triangles, and one door alone was over 1 million. I had to cut it down.
  • Messy models: some loaded tiny, huge, or tipped over because they used different units.
  • No hardware: the Duo obviously isn't out yet, and the outer screen only works while the camera is on, so I had to work around the simulator to get all the screens on.
