Inspiration
βIn 2023 (as of September 11), there have been 23 confirmed weather/climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each to affect United States. These events included 2 flooding events, 18 severe storm events, 1 tropical cyclone event, 1 wildfire event, and 1 winter storm event. β - NOAA
- The quote conveys that this problem is very concerning due to the nature of there is nothing we can do other than prepare for them. However, we do not prioritize this enough. As Engineers and Computer Scientists, it is our job to decrease these accidents happening as much as possible. Through Prevent It!, we hope that its users become better informed about their vehicles, home, weather and more so that they can make better decisions and minimize damage as much as possible.
What it does
- Prevent It! takes the information that they have provided through their policies and makes them a interactive, personalized experience where they can see different analyses of their day-to-day things such as their home, vehicles, personal health, and more. The information presented on the site will help them reach to better decisions and decrease accidents.
How we built it
- We mostly used python libraries such as Streamlit, Pandas, Requests, and more. Additionally, we have also made use of Google Firebase as our database to store our clients' information, and make data analyses out of it.
Challenges we ran into
- Streamlit was a very new topic to all of us. Learning about how Streamlit works has been the biggest challenge to all of us considering the low amount of time that we had. However, we did a lot of research to understand the library and used it as best as we could. We also ran into minor technical difficulties during the beginning stages of our project. However, we over came through them as we learned about the most minute of things about Full Stack Development.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We were proud of our efforts that we have shown into perfecting this project. Whether it be learning streamlit for the first time or working together as a team, we learned a lot from each other and were able to support each other through our difficult patches. Though there were times when we were completely stuck and did not have a clue on what is going on, those experiences have been very valuable for us. We are super proud of our final product and all the ups and downs we went through.
What we learned
- On the technical side of things: We went to the deep depths of Python language through its libraries and what they are capable of, which enhanced our python knowledge. Additionally, we have also learned about Google Firebase and the basics of how it works. On the social side of things: we better understood the importance of being a team member and how to harmoniously work in a team even when the circumstances were not the best.
What's next for Prevent It!
- We plan on using more data analysis concepts to make even more personalized experiences so that our clients' can completely depend upon Prevent It! to make decisions for them so they don't have to worry about it.
