Inspiration
I had many inspirations for this idea. My first inspiration was the frustration you feel when you can't figure out the name of a song stuck in your head. I felt that this happened to everyone, and if you don't know any of the lyrics, you're out of luck. I wanted to find the solution to this problem, which is one aspect of my product.
I was also inspired to take on this idea because of my experience in band class. I have been playing the flute for almost eight years. One challenge I have always faced as a musician is to sightread certain difficult rhythms. This app would help both younger and more experienced musicians master their music more easily, especially in a time where private tutors may not be accessible.
What it does
In theory, this app would allow anyone to listen to and create music with more ease. For those who want to find the name of the song, they would be able to tap out the rhythm stuck in their head, and then songs sharing that same rhythm would show up, sorted by relevancy. The user would be able to hear short clips of the songs and then find the one they were looking for.
This app would also have another section catered to musicians. Using their phone camera, musicians could take pictures of challenging rhythms, and then the phone would play them back to the user. This way, musicians will be able to learn to play a tune easier.
The app would also have other purposes, that already exist. It would have a built-in tuner for people to tune their instruments with. It would also have a section that allowed listeners to find new songs based on the ones they already like. This app would be a one-stop guide to music.
How I built it
In simple terms, I wasn't able to. I took time to try and learn Xcode to develop the app for apple but couldn't quite figure it out. So instead, I coded a website where I simply explained the concept of my idea. I am hoping that as I learn how to code more, I will be able to make this app for real!
Challenges I ran into
I would say my number one challenge was the amount of time I had, especially because I am working alone. On Saturday I had Marching Band and Irish Dance class for nearly the whole day, so I didn't have as much time to try and figure things out as I would have liked. I also simply did not know how to make an app, which was my idea.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud of my idea. Although I wasn't able to execute it, I believe that this could solve a real global problem. Music is everywhere in the world, so solving these problems involving it will help millions of people around the world. I hope to one day make this idea a reality.
What I learned
I learned that every problem has a solution. I took a problem that I found annoying, like not knowing how to play a piece or not knowing the name of a song, and created an idea to solve this problem.
What's next for Presto
The next step would be to make this an actual app. I plan to start learning how to create apps so that this idea can be a reality.
