✅ Inspiration As an immigrant studying in the U.S., I’ve seen firsthand how new arrivals often struggle to connect with the host country's culture. Many unintentionally isolate themselves, leading to cultural gaps, misunderstandings, and even tension. I wanted to build something that bridges this divide — not by asking people to abandon their roots, but by encouraging appreciation and participation in the host culture, fostering mutual respect and social cohesion.
✅ What it does Our platform is an AI-powered cultural guide that helps immigrants learn about and engage with the culture of their new country. It offers: Local customs and etiquette tips Cultural events and traditions Language basics and communication norms Tools for understanding unspoken rules of daily life It’s a practical way to support respectful integration without cultural erasure.
✅ How we built it We built the platform using: Frontend: HTML/CSS and JavaScript for a responsive, multilingual UI Backend: Node.js and Express to manage routes and content APIs OpenAI's API: To generate culturally sensitive responses and context-aware suggestions GeoAPI + Country Data: To customize content based on the user’s location Content Curation: Sourced from cultural institutes, government resources, and community organizations
✅ Challenges we ran into Cultural sensitivity: Making sure we educate without stereotyping was a major design challenge. Content localization: Providing culturally accurate information for different countries required careful vetting. Balancing design: We had to keep the platform informative but not overwhelming, especially for newcomers with language barriers.
✅ Accomplishments that we're proud of Creating a platform that feels inclusive and educational rather than preachy or one-sided Integrating live AI responses to personalize the experience based on the user’s location and needs Building something rooted in personal experience and feedback from other immigrants
✅ What we learned Cultural integration isn't just a personal task — it's a social one. Host countries can support it better through technology and awareness. Designing for empathy and usability is just as important as functionality. Real people’s stories and needs should guide what we build, especially in social good projects.
✅ What's next for Preserving Host Country Culture Amidst Immigration Expand to more countries starting with migrant hotspots like Germany, Canada, and Australia Partner with cultural institutions and embassies to make the content even more accurate and official Add voice support and accessibility features for users with low literacy or visual impairments Build a mobile app to increase reach and make it available offline
