Inspiration
PrescribeIT was inspired by a deeply personal experience. After my father’s coronary artery bypass surgery, managing his medications was overwhelming. With over 20 medicines to track, shifting schedules, and hard-to-read prescriptions, it became clear how inefficient the system was. Doctors, too, expressed their frustration with outdated prescription management tools. This led me to create a solution that makes the process seamless for both patients and doctors.
PrescribeIT is designed to be used during medical consultations, allowing doctors to generate and share prescriptions effortlessly without relying on paper-based prescriptions or being tied to desktop computers. The app is available on Mac, iPad, and iOS, ensuring accessibility and convenience across multiple platforms.
In nature, species have developed efficient, real-time communication methods to ensure survival. Ants use pheromones and antennae to pass messages instantly, ensuring their colonies function smoothly. Similarly, whales and dolphins communicate using sound waves over long distances, without relying on external infrastructure. These principles inspired PrescribeIT’s offline-first design, which allows doctors and patients to share prescriptions without needing Wi-Fi or an internet connection, ensuring uninterrupted healthcare even in remote areas.
Just like how ants relay messages quickly and accurately to guide their colonies, PrescribeIT ensures that doctors can instantly transmit prescriptions to patients without delays or miscommunication. And much like dolphins sending clear, structured messages underwater, PrescribeIT maintains organized, structured data transmission so that prescriptions are stored, shared, and modified effortlessly.
What It Does
PrescribeIT is a comprehensive app designed to streamline prescription management for doctors and patients.
- For Doctors: It simplifies creating, managing, and sharing prescriptions. Doctors can input patient details, symptoms, vitals, and medications in a structured, intuitive interface. They can share prescriptions wirelessly with patients, generate PDFs, and even edit existing prescriptions.
- For Patients: It enables patients to receive prescriptions securely, set medication reminders with one tap, view their medicine schedules, and access emergency contact lists with ease. PrescribeIT eliminates manual tracking, ensuring that patients never miss a dose or lose critical health information.
How I Built It
PrescribeIT was developed using Swift for iOS to ensure a seamless and efficient user experience. The app features:
- Local connectivity technologies (e.g., Multipeer Connectivity) for secure offline sharing between doctors and patients.
- A modular interface designed for simplicity and ease of use, tailored separately for doctors and patients.
- A robust reminder system for medication schedules, built to work natively within the iOS ecosystem.
- Comprehensive testing to ensure data integrity, offline functionality, and secure communication.
Challenges I Ran Into
Developing PrescribeIT wasn’t without its challenges:
- Offline Sharing: Ensuring reliable and secure communication between devices without requiring the internet was technically complex.
- User Interface Design: Balancing simplicity and functionality for two distinct user groups—doctors and patients—was a meticulous process.
- Data Organization: Structuring prescription data to be both flexible and easy to manage for users required careful planning.
- Time Constraints: Combining these features into a polished app within a limited timeframe was challenging but rewarding.
Accomplishments That I'm Proud Of
- Successfully implementing wireless prescription sharing without relying on internet connectivity.
- Designing a clean and intuitive dual-interface tailored for doctors and patients.
- Creating a one-tap reminder system for patients, making medication management easier than ever.
- Building an app that addresses real-world challenges in healthcare, inspired by personal experiences and feedback from users.
What I Learned
Developing PrescribeIT taught a few valuable lessons:
- User-Centric Design: Understanding the needs of both doctors and patients was crucial in shaping the app’s features.
- Technical Problem-Solving: Implementing secure offline communication required exploring advanced technologies like Multipeer Connectivity.
- Healthcare Ecosystem Insights: Collaborating with doctors provided deep insights into the inefficiencies of current systems and the importance of intuitive design in healthcare tools.
What’s Next for PrescribeIT
The journey doesn’t end here. The next steps for PrescribeIT include:
- Evolving into an EHR: Expanding PrescribeIT into a full-fledged Electronic Health Record system with the best user experience in the industry.
- AI Integration: Leveraging AI to assist doctors in generating prescriptions based on conversations with patients, reducing manual input.
- Cross-Platform Support: Building Android and web versions to reach a wider audience.
- Cloud Syncing: Introducing optional cloud storage for backup and multi-device access while maintaining offline functionality.
- Advanced Features: Adding multilingual support, analytics for medication adherence, and integration with wearable health devices.
PrescribeIT aims to become a cornerstone of modern healthcare, empowering doctors and patients while setting new standards in prescription management.
