Inspiration

I always had an interest in the prepping community and was surprised to find there's no great modern app for Preppers (think of like how Strava is THE APP to have for anyone into running/fitness.. or AllTrails for hiking, etc). Also, the last 5 years since Covid have really changed the world and made it much more chaotic. As younger generations are sucked into devices, they forget the basic survival skills our ancestors knew (starting a fire from scratch, living in the woods alone, farming, hunting, etc).

So all of this served as inspiration to me and I though let's try to make the app! After a couple days of initial research online on what users wanted out of such an app, I had a more clear idea of the main features I wanted (a fun + useful inventory system, offline survival manual, skills training, and plans/guidance).

What it does

Preppr is your all-in-one survival app designed to help you prepare for anything life throws at you. Whether you're a seasoned prepper or just starting out, Preppr equips you with the tools, knowledge, and plans to stay ready and resilient.

Key Features: Complete Inventory Management, Personalized Preppr Plans, Offline Survival Manual, Skills Training

How we built it

It was my first time building an app (I've built a couple small websites before but never had a formal education in CS.) So, I used a lot of Claude + Cursor to help guide me through the whole process.

Technologies used: React Native + Expo, Replicate.com, Firebase, Sentry, and of course RevenueCat :)

Challenges we ran into

Building your first app isn't easy and especially in a matter of 2-3 weeks makes it even more challenging. One of the difficult tasks I was stuck on (alongside Claude haha), was rendering large lists of products from my firebase and making the search/filtering etc work perfectly. It took a lot of back and forth with console logs, my own thoughts on what the solution could be, and then Claude is actually genius in that it will use all that information to come to solutions, which often work! It was painful in the process but ultimately very fulfilling.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I built and launched my first app within 2 weeks! Then, I launched 3 more updates (bug fixes, content revision, new features) in the next week. Now, I'm focusing on marketing my app through TikTok, Meta Ads, and reaching out to prepper communities :)

What we learned

Learned a ton about app development, the app review process, the best frameworks/libraries to use, how to best utilize Claude, and most importantly, KEEPING SCOPE LIMITED.

What's next for Preppr: Learn, Stock, Survive

Next, I want to build out more essential features that I think could really help propel this app (community features such as posting/feed/groups and more inventory improvements such as drag and drop rearrangement). At the same time, I'm marketing through any channel I can -- I need to reach more people :).
