Premise Pulse

Inspiration

As a writer, I wanted to solve a problem I'd experienced myself: how do you know whether a story idea is genuinely compelling before investing weeks or months developing it?

Many AI writing tools focus on generating content. I wanted to create something different, an intelligent first reader that helps writers evaluate and strengthen their ideas while leaving the creative work firmly in their hands.

What it does

Premise Pulse analyses story premises, synopses and opening pages to provide structured, actionable feedback. It evaluates factors such as hook strength, reader curiosity, emotional pull, originality and market positioning, and offers practical prompts to help writers improve their concepts.

Rather than replacing creativity, it aims to give authors greater confidence in the stories they choose to pursue.

How we built it

Premise Pulse was built using React, Next.js and AI-assisted development techniques, with OpenAI powering the analysis engine. The application combines carefully designed prompts with a structured presentation layer to deliver feedback that is easy to understand and immediately useful.

The user experience was designed to feel polished and approachable, transforming AI output into a clear report rather than an overwhelming block of text.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was prompt engineering. The feedback needed to be insightful and balanced, constructive without being discouraging, and encouraging without simply flattering every submission.

Another challenge was deciding on the right scope. It was tempting to add content generation features, but I deliberately kept the focus on analysing and strengthening ideas rather than writing stories for users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm particularly proud that Premise Pulse provides genuinely useful feedback rather than generic AI responses. The structured analysis, reader questions, marketing hooks and revision prompts work together to give writers practical next steps.

I'm also proud of taking the project from concept to a deployed, working application in a short timeframe while maintaining a clean user experience and a clear product vision.

What we learned

Building Premise Pulse reinforced the importance of starting with a real user problem rather than a technology. AI is most valuable when it augments human creativity instead of replacing it.

The project also demonstrated how quickly modern AI development tools can turn an idea into a functional product, allowing more time to focus on user experience, prompt design and product thinking.

What's next for Premise Pulse

Future plans include user accounts and database saved analysis history.

The long-term vision is to make Premise Pulse a trusted companion for writers. I want it to be a tool that helps them understand the strengths of their ideas, identify opportunities for improvement and approach their work with greater confidence.
