Inspiration

My father is very much into stock trading and he's always watching the currency exchange rates of dollars, pounds and euros. I was thinking about learning more about Time Series and I read about it and I got to know about ways of forecasting different stuff like- weather, currency exchange rates and more.

What it does

It forecasts the exchange rates of Pound sterling, United States Dollar, Euro in INR. One can forecast the exchange rate up to 5 years in the future.

How we built it

We created a dataset of daily exchange rates of Pounds, Dollars, Euros in INR of the past 5 years through Yahoo Finance. We used Facebook Prophet to implement Time Series to our dataset and predict the exchange rate of these currencies up to 5 years from the current date.

Challenges we ran into

Creating the dataset was a huge issue, we tried a lot APIs and then even tried Web Scarping, ultimately we found Yahoo Finance website which let us download the data of the past 5 years. As we were learning about Time Series, we faced quite a lot of issues regarding the implementation of it. We faced a lot of issues in installing fbprophet and then deploying our project onto Heroku.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was the first hackathon for each member of our group. We had no idea what a hackathon is, what would be our idea for it but we did it all together and we learned everything together whatever we did to complete our project.

What we learned

First of all we learned what a hackathon is and how a team works together in a project. No member can know everything required to build a project, it requires brainstorming and input of each team member. We learned about Time Series, using fbprophet and how to deploy the project using Streamlit on Heroku.

What's next for Forecasting of Currency Exchange Rate

Next we will add more currencies to our app, so that the user can check exchange rate of almost any national currency he wants to. We would like to improve the UI experience and add a feature in which the user can check the exchange rate of any currency in INR on any previous data.
