Pre-Therapy AI Intake Assistant

Inspiration

Over the past few months, we spent a lot of time understanding emotional wellness challenges and observing how difficult it can be for people to seek mental health support. Many individuals hesitate to open up, struggle to find the right therapist, or feel emotionally exhausted repeating their story again and again.

At the same time, therapists are overwhelmed with repetitive intake conversations, documentation, and administrative work before actual therapy can begin. This reduces the amount of time they can spend delivering meaningful care.

We realized there was an opportunity to use AI not to replace therapists, but to help them scale their impact while making it easier for people to take the first step toward support.

What it does

Pre-Therapy AI Intake Assistant is an AI-powered conversational intake platform designed for mental health professionals.

Before a therapy session begins, users interact with an emotionally intelligent AI assistant that naturally gathers:

  • emotional concerns
  • stress triggers
  • personal history
  • goals for therapy
  • behavioral patterns
  • mood indicators

The AI then generates a structured therapist-ready summary that highlights key emotional themes, risk indicators, and relevant context.

This allows therapists to:

  • reduce repetitive intake work
  • prepare faster for sessions
  • focus more on actual therapy
  • support more patients efficiently

Our goal is to improve accessibility to mental health care while preserving the human connection at the center of therapy.

How we built it

We designed the platform around a conversational AI workflow instead of traditional clinical forms.

The system includes:

  • a conversational intake interface
  • AI-powered emotional summarization
  • risk and urgency flagging
  • structured therapist dashboards
  • secure session context generation

We focused heavily on conversation design to ensure the experience feels natural, supportive, and non-robotic.

The platform transforms long emotional conversations into concise, structured summaries that therapists can quickly review before sessions begin.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing efficiency with empathy.

Mental health conversations are deeply human, and we quickly realized that users disengage if the AI feels too clinical or interrogative. Designing emotionally intelligent conversational flows without making the experience feel artificial was extremely difficult.

Another challenge was defining clear ethical boundaries:

  • avoiding over-reliance on AI
  • not positioning the product as a replacement for therapy
  • ensuring sensitive emotional situations are handled responsibly

We also had to think carefully about trust, privacy, and how therapists would adopt AI into existing workflows.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud that the product focuses on augmenting human care instead of replacing it.

Some key accomplishments include:

  • creating a conversational intake experience instead of static forms
  • generating structured therapist-ready summaries from emotional conversations
  • designing the platform around therapist efficiency and patient comfort
  • identifying a scalable way to reduce intake workload while maintaining personalization

Most importantly, we built a solution that aims to help therapists spend more time helping people instead of managing repetitive administrative tasks.

What we learned

We learned that mental health technology is not just an AI problem — it’s a trust problem.

People do not want perfect automation; they want to feel understood, safe, and emotionally comfortable.

We also learned that therapists are open to AI when it reduces operational burden without interfering with clinical judgment.

Another major insight was that the future of mental health care is likely hybrid: AI can assist with structure, tracking, and preparation, while humans provide empathy, interpretation, and healing.

What's next for Pre-Therapy AI Intake Assistant

Our next goal is to work directly with therapists and mental health clinics to validate real-world workflows and measure how much time can actually be saved during intake.

Future plans include:

  • multilingual emotional intake support
  • therapist workflow integrations
  • between-session emotional tracking
  • personalized care insights
  • AI-assisted follow-up summaries
  • mental health accessibility tools for underserved populations

Long term, we envision building the intelligence layer that helps mental health professionals deliver more personalized care to more people, without increasing burnout.
