About PrayerNest

Inspiration

PrayerNest was inspired by a simple problem: prayer can be difficult to make a consistent part of everyday life. After a long or stressful day, it can be hard to slow down, reflect on what happened, and know exactly what you want to bring into prayer.

I wanted to build something that could lower that barrier without trying to replace the most important part...the person praying.

PrayerNest turns a user's reflection about their day into a personalized prayer. From there, the user can enter Prayer Focus, a distraction-free space where they can take a moment to pray the generated prayer themselves. The prayer can then be saved to a personal journal, creating a record of their prayer journey over time.

The goal isn't to have AI pray for someone. It's to use technology to help someone make time to pray.

How I Built It

PrayerNest is a React Native application built with Expo. The app combines local device storage with a Supabase backend.

The core experience is intentionally simple:

Reflect → Generate → Focus → Journal → Return tomorrow

The daily verse, prayer streak, theme preferences, journal, notifications, and other parts of the experience are designed around that recurring ritual.

AI is used to transform the user's reflection into a short, personal prayer. I designed the generation system so that the prayer is based on the specific details the user provides rather than producing a generic prayer.

Supabase handles authentication, user data, journal entries, and AI usage tracking. Free users can use a limited number of complimentary generations and then access additional daily generations through rewarded usage, while Premium users receive unlimited prayers along with cloud journal backup, cross-device synchronization, and an ad-free experience.

RevenueCat is being integrated to handle Premium purchases and entitlements while keeping subscription management separate from the application's core logic.

What I Learned

One of the biggest lessons was that building an app is much more than getting the primary feature to work.

I spent significant time thinking through what data actually needs to exist on a server versus what should remain on the device. For example, preferences such as the app's theme can remain local, while information that needs to survive device changes, such as a Premium user's journal, needs a reliable cloud-backed identity.

I also learned how important it is to design monetization alongside the product rather than adding it at the very end. PrayerNest's free and Premium experiences are built around the idea that the core purpose of the app should remain accessible while Premium provides meaningful additional value.

Most importantly, I learned that AI works best when it is part of a larger experience rather than being the experience itself. A simple text prompt that produces a prayer isn't particularly difficult to build. Creating a complete loop around that interaction with daily reflection, personalized prayer, Prayer Focus, journaling, and habit formation is where the product becomes meaningful.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was balancing a meaningful user experience with the technical requirements of a production-ready application.

Authentication was particularly important because PrayerNest allows users to begin using the app without creating a permanent account. I needed to design a system where an anonymous user could use the core experience while still having a reliable path to an authenticated account when they chose Premium.

Another challenge was building reliable AI usage limits. Instead of relying entirely on local counters, usage can be associated with a user identity in the backend, making limits much more difficult to bypass and allowing Premium entitlements to be managed independently.

I also had to work through the practical challenges of mobile development: asynchronous local storage, authentication state, notification behavior, database security policies, subscription state, and making sure the UI responds correctly as these systems change.

What's Next

PrayerNest is currently at the functional alpha stage, with the core prayer experience in place. The next step is extensive real-world testing and refinement.

One feature I'm particularly interested in adding after launch is Prayer Insights. Over time, PrayerFlow could identify recurring themes in a user's journal, such as gratitude, guidance, family, forgiveness, or personal growth and help users see how their prayer life has developed over weeks and months.

Ultimately, I want PrayerNest to remain simple: a quiet place to reflect on your day, turn that reflection into prayer, and make prayer a habit.
