We were frustrated watching brilliant students and researchers struggle with the "productivity paradox" - tools were either too complex (Notion, Obsidian) requiring hours of setup, or too simple to be useful. Meanwhile, AI tools hallucinated facts that weren't in their documents. We envisioned a platform that makes you productive in 60 seconds while being powerful enough for PhD research - where AI augments your thinking with YOUR knowledge, not internet rumors.

What it does

Praxis revolutionizes knowledge work through Instant Context Retrieval - as you write, relevant content from your documents appears as ghost text when you pause. Press Tab to accept, keep typing to ignore. No popups, no interruptions, just seamless knowledge at your fingertips with exact citations.

How we built it

Frontend: Next.js 14 with TypeScript for type safety, Tailwind CSS for responsive design, Framer Motion for fluid animations, React Flow/D3.js for visualizations, Three.js for 3D STEM content

Backend: Node.js/Express API, Socket.io for real-time features, Claude 4 Sonnet via Anthropic SDK, LangChain for RAG pipeline, ChromaDB for vector embeddings, Supabase for auth/persistence

Architecture: Event-driven design, progressive enhancement, desktop-first optimization (1280px+), sub-100ms response times

Challenges we ran into

Real-time Context Matching: Achieving sub-100ms latency for document suggestions required custom vector indexing and intelligent caching
AI Grounding: Preventing hallucinations while maintaining helpful responses meant building a sophisticated RAG pipeline with source validation
UI/UX Balance: Making 12+ complex features discoverable without overwhelming users - solved through progressive disclosure and natural language interfaces
