Inspiration

I wanted to build something for students who are tired of jumping between different websites just to prepare for one exam.

A student might have a roadmap in one place, notes somewhere else, mock tests on another website, current affairs on another, and still need YouTube or government resources when they get stuck. Expensive coaching can make this even harder for students who cannot afford it.

That made me think: what if the basic preparation journey could be put into one simple platform?

That idea became GenZ Vidyalaya.

What it does

GenZ Vidyalaya is an AI-powered learning platform designed for Indian students preparing for competitive exams and skills.

Students can choose an exam or skill, follow a structured roadmap, study notes and topic explanations, track progress, practice with mock tests, and access daily current-affairs updates.

When the provided explanation is not enough, students can also find additional resources such as YouTube, Wikipedia, NCERT and SWAYAM.

The platform currently covers major tracks including UPSC CSE, SSC CGL, RRB NTPC, Banking PO, JEE, NEET UG, GATE, CAT/MBA, CA Foundation, CLAT/Law, MBBS preparation, school boards and skill-based learning.

There is also a low-cost premium model, starting at ₹9 per week, for features such as expanded mock-test access and daily updates.

How we built it

I built GenZ Vidyalaya as a solo project.

The frontend uses React, while the backend is built with FastAPI and Python. Supabase handles persistent application data and account information. Razorpay handles payments.

For the AI layer, I integrated Google Gemini through Google Cloud Vertex AI using Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite.

Gemini is used to generate roadmaps, study notes, topic explanations, mock-test questions and daily current-affairs content.

The frontend is deployed on Vercel and the backend is deployed on Render.

I also used standard open-source frameworks and libraries during development, along with AI coding assistance. The product concept, educational workflow, business model, integrations and application-specific implementation were developed for GenZ Vidyalaya.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was making everything work together as an actual product instead of just making a demo.

I had to deal with API issues, AI response times, caching, authentication, premium access, payment verification, production deployment and mobile responsiveness.

Building it alone also meant constantly switching between product design, frontend, backend, database, deployment and testing.

One of the biggest lessons from the process was that getting something to work once is much easier than making it reliable enough for real users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud that GenZ Vidyalaya went from an idea to a live working product during the hackathon.

It now has a real frontend and backend, live Gemini integration through Vertex AI, user accounts, structured roadmaps, study content, mock tests, daily updates, premium payments and a responsive interface.

I'm especially proud that the AI is not just a button saying "Powered by Gemini." It is actually part of the content-generation workflow used by the application.

I also managed to build and deploy the entire product as a solo developer.

What we learned

I learned that building a business is much more than building features.

A product needs to be fast, understandable, stable, affordable and easy to use. I also learned how important caching, production debugging, payment verification and responsive design become once real users start interacting with the application.

Most importantly, I learned that AI becomes much more useful when it is connected to a real workflow. Instead of using Gemini just because the hackathon required AI, I used it where it can reduce the manual work involved in creating and expanding educational content.

What's next for GenZ Vidyalaya — AI-Powered Learning for Every Student

The next goal is to make GenZ Vidyalaya useful to even more students.

I want to expand language support, especially Hindi, improve the quality and personalization of AI-generated learning content, add better progress and performance insights, and continue improving speed and reliability.

I also want to expand the number of exam and skill tracks and make the platform more useful for students who are preparing without expensive coaching.

The long-term vision is simple:

Give students a clear path to learn, practice and improve — without making cost or scattered resources the biggest barrier.
