Inspiration

When introduced to the theme "Intro to skies" we immediately thought of astronomy. First, we thought that we would create a website that presents information about stars close to our solar system, their properties and components. However, after realizing there is no significance or use for this website, we scraped the idea. Next, we decided to create a website that presents information about stars and stellar evolution, how the stage a star is during their evolution may affect society and our future societies. Additionally, we wanted to implement an app/component within our website that allows us to monitor stars, their masses, and information about their stages within stellar evolution. However, due to a lack of information regarding stars, inability to create a functional design, and an undefined goal, we decided to scrap the idea. After, we decided to focus less on space and more about the environment in the atmosphere, aiming to create a website that monitors air quality globally. However, due to how common this idea was, we decided to plan something else. Finally, our brainstorming led us to the relationships of the moon to beach tides. We created a prompt based off of how the status of the moon can affect tides, either making them more dangerous or more calm.

What it does

Our website helps those planning for beach trips and vacations much more easier. Our websites will gather information regarding the location of the beach and the date the user will be visiting, them provide information on what time would be the best to visit this beach, as well as additional information that would prove useful to any trips (i.e. temperature of wind speed).

How we built it

We researched information regarding how the moon interacts with beach tides, then developed a well thought out prompt that was reviewed and implemented by AI, helping create a website to present this information and its function. After it created our program, we reviewed the code and prompts of the website in order to optimize it and make it as efficient as possible

Challenges we ran into

Finding a logical, relevant, significant, and unique idea proved to be a challenging aspect of developing this program. We spent the majority of the first day trying out multiple ideas and creating dozens of websites, for the majority of them to be scrapped or remolded. We also found actually developing our website in order to make it appeal to not only the judges, but make it appeal to those that might use this app in the future

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being able to create a website that can analyze the state of the moon and then use that information in order to make interpretations and present information that can be used in a significant fashion are one of the many achievements we have proudly accomplished. We also find pride in the ability to find the majority of beaches/locations consistently in order to provide information for all future users

What we learned

How the properties, state, and relationships the moon has with beach tides. We learned that the Moon is the primary driver of ocean tides. Its gravitational pull creates a bulge in the ocean on the side facing the Moon (and a matching bulge on the opposite side due to inertial effects).

Spring tides during full and new moons can cause higher-than-normal water levels. Combined with onshore winds, this can lead to minor coastal flooding — important to know before setting up on the beach.

What's next for Praia da Lua

Adding more locations/different beaches and additional information that may be beneficial to the user are some of the many reformations and changes we can make to our program, making it even more efficient and effective to carry out its function. Making the information more expansive and easier to read is also something to change and being able to sync a vacation's events to the most optimal times to do them.
