Inspiration

There are around 260 million out of school. Thirty-nine per cent of the worldwide poor have no formal education at all. 15 million girls of primary school age will never have the opportunity to learn to read and write in primary school, compared to about 10 million boys. This problem is especially prevalent in India.

What it does

Education can be the catalyst needed to pull families and communities out of the cycle of poverty. Knowledge gives children the power to dream of a better future and the confidence needed to pursue a full education, which in turn will help generations to come. We hope to build a community of people who can support and educate the underprivileged for free. Our site allows people to look for tutors who are willing to teach for free. People can visit the profiles of the registered tutors, view their qualifications, the subjects that they teach etc. To connect with the tutor, they can contact them through the contact details on the tutor's profile, or send them a message through the website itself.

How we built it

We all belonged to different parts of the country, so we used Zoom, Canva. For the website, we built it using HTML, CSS, Tailwind and Bootstrap.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into quite a few challenges. Since all our team members are quite new to hackathons and are beginners in programming, we faced time management issues. We made some decisions that did not work out like we initially started with building out the backend (That code is far from complete but we still added it as the second GitHub link!). But a little way through it, we realised that we did not have enough time and experience to fully do it in 24 hours.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are happy to have been able to come up with a solution to a real-world problem in the field of education. Throughout the hackathon, we learned a lot about team-work, coding, how to manage time and still come up with a feasible idea.

What we learned

Cross collaboration with people from very different backgrounds. Through our project, we learned how serious the problem of illiteracy is and how many people it affects.

What's next for Pragya

We hope to put together a full fledged website. We also realise that out project has some limitations like verification of the tutors as well as students, so we hope to mitigate them.
