Inspiration

Inspiration was really seeing other apps being stuck in time. Most popular apps I found on the App Store were kind of outdated and I'm a person, who values good design (not vibe coded design). I might not have everything figured out yet for designing and the whole process of building apps. But building is so fun to me and I wanna keep doing it. And I tried developing with previous OpenAI models and I've heard that the 5.6 series is definitely better at it and I wanted to try that myself again. So I did over the past few days now.

What it does

The app is a simple, but at least in my eyes a good designed iOS app that gives you the ability to track your gym workouts easily. You can develop your own plans, add your own exercises, start a workout, have a clean single page, where you can measure sets and see the rest timer. And of course, if you can lift more than the previous configured weight, then you can edit it right directly on this page during the workout. And this is also being tracked. On the progress page, you can see how high the volume over the past few weeks, month, and year is. And you can also switch to a body weight graph view and simply see, how well you did.

How we built it

PR is completely native, so it is SwiftUI, and it's been primarily built with Codex, specifically: Sol 5.6 (medium and high reasoning).

Challenges we ran into

There weren't any particular hard challenges I ran into that took a lot of effort to fix. But I would say the biggest issue I had, before the 5h limit was removed (for now), is the 5h limit and the usage consumption. I also had to steer 5.6 a bit into keeping a clean folder structure. So before, when I started the project from scratch, it started doing a lot of work in one single file. Add: Some frontend tasks were hard but after a few turns, Sol got it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I would say the biggest accomplishment was actually that I did it most of the foundation in like 2 days.

What we learned

I definitely learned more about authentication, about Cloud Kit from Apple and Swift components.

What's next for PR - Gym Workout Tracker

There are still many features to add but in my opinion the app stands out from competitors in terms of UI and hopefully also in usability. I'm not sure if I'm going to add AI features but if the app gains traction and users want it, it will be implemented.
