Inspiration

This project was inspired by the need for greater transparency in how companies handle user data. Privacy policies are often dense, making it hard for users to understand how their data is used. Using data visualization, this project clarifies these policies, highlighting patterns and potential issues like data contamination. Our goal is to empower users and researchers by promoting data awareness and informed decision-making.

What it does

This project analyzes and visualizes privacy policy data to reveal insights about data usage and potential risks. It detects patterns, such as data contamination and memorization, that may affect data quality and transparency. By converting complex privacy policies into clear visualizations, it helps users and researchers easily understand how data is collected and handled. The project aims to make privacy practices more accessible, promoting greater awareness and accountability.

How we built it

The project was built using a combination of data analysis, machine learning, and data visualization techniques. Python was used to process and analyze privacy policy datasets, with libraries like Plotly for creating visualizations that highlight patterns and potential issues in the data.

Challenges we ran into

Importance of Data Cleaning: Working with privacy policy data emphasized the need for rigorous data cleaning to ensure accuracy, as inconsistencies can significantly impact analysis and insights. Balancing Clarity and Complexity: Translating complex data into accessible visualizations taught us how to simplify without losing essential details, a crucial skill for effective data storytelling.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating Impactful Visualizations: Our visualizations turn dense legal information into insights that highlight key privacy concerns, helping users and researchers make informed decisions.

What we learned

We learned what data contamination is.

What's next for PPTE (Privacy Policy Transparency Explorer)

we want to create a interactive website to showcase further data.
