Inspiration
We realized there was no consolidated website for checking snowfall for multiple ski resorts at once. We wanted to save time in deciding where to go skiing.
What it does
It scrapes the internet of many online ski resort sites and puts the data onto an interactive map for users to check.
How we built it
We used MecSimCalc Map features and Python to build this web app, utilizing libraries such as pandas, BeautifulSoup and folium.
Challenges we ran into
Not being able to scrape information from some sites. We had to find other sites and resorts to use. We also faced some problems in creating our MecSimCalc environment, as we weren't able to import libraries in their latest version.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Figuring out an interactive map library and web-scraping library in Python to create a novel solution to a problem that faces many skiers/snowboarders world wide. Also, learning a new app development platform.
What we learned
It takes a lot of work and resilience to make something that is presentable and functional to people who would want to use the service. We have never built something like this before and learned so much about software development along the way. We also gained proficiency in numerous libraries that will prove useful in future projects.
What's next for PowTracker
Adding more locations and broadening the accessibility of the app. We want everyone to save time using this one-stop place for checking where to plan their next ski vacation. Ideally, we'd create a website with a JavaScript user interface to accompany our existing backend to increase user traffic.
