Power Soccer Nexus catering to the diverse needs of both able-bodied AND disabled individuals in the power soccer community. We address the shortcomings of the national platform by leveraging modern technologies and directly tackling local team issues, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive experience for all players and enthusiasts.
Inspiration
Last quarter my couple of the team members volunteered at Bascom Community Center's power soccer team as part of our ELSJ Social Justice Experiential Learning. This initiative encourages us to integrate the realities of the world into our lives, fostering critical thinking, empathetic responses to suffering, and constructive engagement. Through our involvement, we discovered that Power Soccer embodies a transformative journey – it's where wheels truly become wings. Witnessing individuals with disabilities, often confined to wheelchairs, find newfound freedom and empowerment on the power soccer field was awe-inspiring. Just as wings enable flight, Power Soccer Nexus symbolizes elevation, fostering a community where limitations are transcended, and possibilities abound for players, coaches, and supporters alike.
Why Power Soccer Nexus?
By volunteering, we recognized two primary challenges faced by local power soccer teams nationwide. Firstly, many potential players are unaware that they can join teams in their own towns, hindering the growth and inclusivity of the sport. Secondly, the reliance on caretakers and parents of players as coaches, assistants, and referees introduces biases and unreliability into team management. At Power Soccer Nexus, we aim to address these issues head-on by emphasizing accessibility, awareness, and modern technological advancement —ensuring that everyone knows they can join a team—and by actively recruiting passionate, able-bodied individuals to fill permanent roles, promoting fairness and professionalism in every aspect of the game.
What it does
Power Soccer Nexus is an online platform dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities through power soccer. We connect players, coaches, and supporters, providing resources, team locators, merchandise customization, and game notifications. Our mission is to foster inclusivity, community, and empowerment within the power soccer movement, breaking down barriers and celebrating achievements.
How we built it
For the homepage, React was employed for frontend development, seamlessly integrating a 3D model created in Blender with Three.js for interactive rendering. The 3D model shows the difference of a power soccer wheelchair rather than a traditional one. The Get Involved page harnesses the power of the Google Maps API, facilitating an interactive map locator with customized pinpoints linking to real power soccer pages nationwide. Email functionality enables users to connect with coaches and team managers, while the Merchandise Section utilizes the DALL-E AI API to generate logos and 3.js for displaying merchandise logos in on a 3D wheelchair. A user-friendly checkout system is implemented for merchandise purchases, and the Sign-Up/Login page is powered by Firebase and Firestore for authentication and management, allowing users to input phone numbers for text notifications. To keep users informed, the Twilio API sends text notifications about upcoming games based on their location preferences.
Challenges we ran into
Navigating through the development process, we encountered various challenges across multiple technologies and implementations. Being new to 3.js presented a learning curve as we delved into creating and integrating 3D models into our platform, requiring meticulous attention to detail and experimentation. Similarly, grappling with the intricacies of DALL-E AI posed challenges in effectively leveraging its capabilities for logo generation within the Merchandise Section. Additionally, integrating Firestore into our Sign-Up/Login page demanded thorough understanding and implementation to ensure seamless user authentication and management. Understanding the nuances of the Twilio API proved to be another hurdle as we sought to incorporate text notifications based on user preferences, requiring careful configuration and testing to ensure accurate delivery. The main challenge, however, lay in harmonizing these technologies cohesively, as each component had its unique requirements and integration points.

Overcoming these challenges demanded dedication, collaboration, and a willingness to explore innovative solutions, ultimately enriching our understanding and proficiency across the entire tech stack.
What we learned
Through the journey of building Power Soccer Nexus, we've gleaned invaluable lessons that transcend mere technical expertise. One profound realization is that disability does not equate to inability; it's merely a different ability waiting to be celebrated and harnessed, regardless of their physical challenges. We've come to appreciate the importance of accessibility, both in terms of physical spaces and digital platforms, in ensuring equal opportunities and participation for all. We learned we can create a more inclusive and compassionate world for everyone.
