Inspiration
Our inspiration stemmed from the pressing need for accessible tools to help communities prepare for and respond to severe weather events. Recognizing that many individuals may lack reliable information during a crisis, we aimed to build a chatbot that provides essential resources, like nearby shelters, gas stations, and hospitals, to enhance preparedness and safety.
What it does
Byte Storm is a storm-preparation chatbot that empowers users by providing quick access to critical information during a storm. By entering their location, users receive a list of nearby shelters, gas stations, and hospitals, as well as other essential preparation tips. Byte Storm supports proactive planning and helps users make informed decisions in real-time, boosting their readiness and safety.
How we built it
We built Byte Storm by assigning team members to different components based on their areas of expertise. Using datasets for shelters, gas stations, and hospitals, we ensured the chatbot provides location-specific responses. The system employs algorithms to process and serve this data efficiently, and we designed a conversational AI interface to make interactions natural and user-friendly.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was integrating multiple data sources to ensure real-time accuracy and relevance. We also faced obstacles in creating a conversational flow that effectively responds to different user needs while minimizing unnecessary dialogue. Ensuring that the chatbot was accessible and intuitive for users under stress required multiple design iterations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud to have created a functional, user-friendly chatbot that consolidates multiple resources into a single tool for storm preparedness. Our team successfully overcame data integration challenges and designed a seamless experience to support users in critical situations. Building a tool with the potential to improve community resilience is a significant accomplishment.
What we learned
Throughout the project, we learned about the complexities of integrating location-based data in real-time and the importance of user-centered design in crisis applications. We also gained experience in cross-disciplinary collaboration, which enhanced our problem-solving approach and made the final product more robust.
What's next for Byte Storm
Next, we plan to expand Byte Storm to cover additional emergencies and integrate more data sources, like real-time traffic and weather data. We aim to refine the chatbot’s interaction flow and explore partnerships with local governments or community organizations to provide verified, location-specific resources. Our goal is to make Byte Storm an essential resource for a variety of crises, enhancing safety and preparedness on a larger scale.
