Power Play optimization

We set out to answer a simple question in mixed-doubles curling: when should you call the Power Play and which teams actually benefit? Our Tableau dashboard quantifies timing, usage, and payoff—flagging Ends 5–7 when trailing 1–2 as the highest-value window, benchmarking teams with a Power Play Index (PPI), and enabling quick comparisons to elite patterns; it’s built from the Games/Ends/Stones → start_of_end table using calcs for Avg Points PP/NoPP, ΔEP, Team PP Usage Rate, FIXED Global Avg Usage, and a tunable PPI weight. We fought Tableau agg/non-agg errors and small-sample noise but shipped a clear, actionable story—timing > frequency, execution quality matters, and a simple rule of thumb (use PP selectively in Ends 5–7 when behind)—while learning a ton about LOD expressions, parameter design, and ruthless visual simplicity.
