Inspiration

Living in a fraternity house, our team often notices leftovers being thrown out near daily because of the inconsistent consumption of large amounts of the food prepared for our brothers. As friends with other Greek Organizations and the student body as a whole, we wish it was easier to share this leftover food with our neighbors to reduce our food waste and grow connections simultaneously. As a result, our team has chosen to develop Potluck. The modern day version of asking your neighbor for sugar, Potluck makes it easy to share leftovers at your college or university, reducing food waste and making friends along the way.

What it does

A user can make, view, and interact with posts and events where food can be shared. Users can also rate other users to show how reliable a provider is, so that users can have peace of mind that their food is safe. Additionally, we chose to limit the user base to contain university students due to the unfortunately growing trend of loneliness in college students.

Limiting the scope of the project to only within universities also aids our commitment to ensure the personal and food safety of the user, since Universities often have expanded public safety policies and the majority of buildings are populated and monitored.

How we built it

We used React-Native and Expo to build a reactive mobile app that we hope to translate seamlessly to the web. Each page is a screen with its own components with Modals to handle in-screen events.

Challenges we ran into

It was difficult to see how the app can help make sure that people are safe when retrieving and consuming the food items shared through Potluck. We eventually decided that all users should be required to log in with a verified school email so that users can feel confident in the food they are consuming with their neighbors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We learned a ton and seeing our project expand in real time was beyond exciting. New to React, much of our team had to overcome the learning curve of our environment, and watching each other grow motivated us to work harder.

What we learned

We learned how to go through a proper development cycle while keeping the user in mind! This was great as many of us haven't completed a project to completion like this.

What's next for Potluck

We would love to add location sharing to Potluck so that a user can see what food is available around them, and timers to show how long an event will last or how long until food expires would provide great value to the user as well. Proper university authentication would be a huge step towards achieving Potlucks true mission, and working with universities to offer rewards for frequent sharers would go a long way towards developing connections on college campuses and reducing our carbon footprint.
