Inspiration
PotLuck was inspired by the idea that food is one of the fastest ways to build real community. Existing social apps focus on content, while meetup platforms focus on logistics. We wanted to combine both into a platform where people can discover recipes, connect through shared culinary interests, and turn online interaction into a real gatherings.
What it does
PotLuck is a social food community platform that helps users discover recipes, join themed food events, and connect with nearby food lovers. Users can share dishes, host potlucks or supper clubs, RSVP to local gatherings, and build trust through the PotLuck Score system. The app supports cultural celebrations, dietary communities, and location-based food discovery through a mobile-first experience.
How we built it
We designed PotLuck as a mobile-first platform inspired by Pinterest, Instagram, and Meetup. The product architecture includes recipe feeds, event discovery, RSVP systems, theme-based filtering, and a trust-scoring framework. The UI system was built around warm food-inspired colors, photo-forward layouts, and streamlined event interactions. We also planned integrations for maps, payments, notifications, image hosting, and identity verification to support scalable community features.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was balancing openness with trust and safety. Because the platform supports real-world gatherings, especially at private homes, we needed a system that encouraged discovery while protecting users. Designing the PotLuck Score, address privacy flow, and event verification process required careful thinking around community trust, moderation, and accessibility. Another challenge was organizing multiple experiences recipes, social feeds, events, maps, and trust systems into a clean and intuitive mobile interface without overwhelming users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a product concept that feels emotionally warm and community-driven rather than transactional. The PotLuck Score system adds accountability and trust to social dining, while the themed discovery system helps users connect over culture, cuisine, and lifestyle interests. We are also proud of the visual identity and UX direction, which combines rich food imagery, bold typography, and event-focused interactions into a cohesive platform experience.
What we learned
We learned that designing social products around real-world interaction requires much deeper consideration of trust and moderation. We also learned how important community identity is in discovery systems, people do not just search for food, they search for belonging, culture, and shared experiences. On the product side, we gained experience structuring scalable data models for recipes, events, RSVP systems, and reputation scoring.
What's next for PotLuck
Next, we plan to expand PotLuck with paid events, in-app messaging, private home verification flows, and host analytics dashboards. We also want to introduce smarter recommendation systems powered by user interests, geographic relevance, and trending food themes. Long term, PotLuck aims to become a trusted platform for discovering local food communities, cultural celebrations, and authentic dining experiences around the world.
