Terangi Malam, Temukan Ajaibnya Alam: Herpingtour di Resort Cikaniki
Inspiration
Our inspiration for this project arose from the desire to promote biodiversity with species diversity, and there are endemic species, in particular herpetofauna consisting of reptiles and amphibians, that can only be found in certain areas, in particular the TGHS area. So in addition to its high conservation value, it can create sustainable economic opportunities at Cikaniki Resort. We decided to focus on ecotourism with the theme of herpingtour, that is, the exploration and observation of reptiles and amphibians in the natural environment. Night activities are unique because herpetofauna tend to be active at night, so a herpetofauna tour can give visitors a different experience. Herping tours can also serve as a means of education about the biodiversity and ecology of herpetofauna.
What it does
What we do:
- Inventory of species: we conduct field surveys to identify, record, and document reptile and amphibian species in Cikaniki Resort as an inventory of information on the presence and diversity of herpetofauna species in Cikaniki.
- Development of tourist routes: we design safe and informative tourist routes for visitors who want to participate in Herpingtour. Determine locations that have interesting herpetofauna diversity and can be accessed safely by visitors. As well as studying environmental conditions, seasons, and patterns of herpetofauna activity at the site.
- Cooperation with Herpetologists: in order to run a successful and sustainable herping tour, cooperation with herpetologists and environmental scientists is essential. They can provide guidance on species protection and environmental management.
- Guide training: we train local guides on ethical behavior and knowledge of wildlife that they will pass on to visitors. Ensuring staff who will supervise herping tours have adequate knowledge and training on herpetofauna behavior, handling techniques, and nature education.
- Determine rules and ethics: establish rules or operational standards for carrying out herping tours for staff or visitors. Remind visitors to respect the natural environment and the animals they observe.
- Ongoing promotions: we promote Herpingtour through our website, social media, and collaborations with local travel agencies. Ensure that potential visitors know about the attractions and unique experiences offered by herping tours.
How I built it
Challenges we face:
- Environmental awareness: visitors may come without an adequate understanding of herpetofauna ecology and the importance of preservation. These challenges could hinder environmental education efforts. Changing people's perception of the importance of protecting reptiles and amphibians
- Wildlife protection: it is concerned with animal welfare as a top priority. Keep ecotourism activities to a minimum and do not interfere with wildlife.
- Environmental damage: Herping tours can have an impact on the environment if not managed properly. Visitors who do not comply with the rules or are excessively present in certain locations can damage the natural habitat.
- Visitor safety: Herping tours are often conducted at night and may involve outdoor travel. Visitor safety must come first, and risks such as slipping, falling, or getting lost need to be identified and addressed.
Challenges I ran into
What makes our project interesting? The project combines aspects of nature conservation, sustainable tourism, and environmental education. This not only increases concern for wildlife but also provides additional income for local communities. Herping tours provide an experience rarely encountered in conventional tourism. Herping tours often attract nature photographers looking for opportunities to capture rare and beautiful moments of herpetofauna in their native habitat.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
What we learned: We learn about understanding the herpetofauna, conservation and preservation, ecosystem ecology, the importance of collaborating with local stakeholders, a deeper understanding of the Cikaniki Resort ecosystem, and sustainable tourism promotion skills.
What I learned
Later Development: To further develop the herping tour program, which needs to be done, among others:
- Additional locations to expand the herping tour program in Jakarta Improve cooperation with researchers who understand herpetofauna. We plan to continue to improve the safety and experience of Herpingtour visitors.
- Improving environmental conservation education about herpetofauna and its function in the sustainability of the Cikani ecosystem The use of technology in utilizing a tracker and identifying herpetofauna species Improve partnerships with local communities so as to empower the surrounding community.
What's next for Potensi Ekowisata melalui Herpingtour di Resort Cikaniki
The future plans for "Potensi Ekowisata Melalui Herping Tour di Resort Cikaniki" may include the following:
Enhanced Visitor Experience: Continuously improving the Herping Tour experience for visitors, including more educational content, comfortable facilities, and interactive elements to engage and educate participants.
Research and Conservation: Collaborating with researchers and conservationists to further study the reptiles and amphibians in the area, with a focus on monitoring and protecting the local biodiversity.
Sustainable Practices: Implementing even more sustainable practices, such as waste management, renewable energy sources, and eco-friendly accommodations, to minimize the environmental impact of the tourism activities.
Community Involvement: Strengthening the involvement of the local community, including providing more economic opportunities, education, and capacity building for the residents of Resort Cikaniki.
Marketing and Promotion: Expanding marketing efforts to reach a wider audience and attract more tourists interested in herping and wildlife conservation.
Monitoring and Evaluation: Regularly assessing the impact of the Herping Tour on the environment, local economy, and community well-being, and making necessary adjustments based on the findings.
Collaboration: Seeking partnerships with other eco-tourism initiatives, local and international organizations, and government agencies to support and grow the project.
By focusing on these aspects, the project can continue to thrive and contribute positively to both ecotourism and conservation efforts in the Resort Cikaniki area.
