Inspiration

After being cooped up in lockdown for a year, we're all itching to get out of the house: to go out to eat, see friends, and most of all-- TRAVEL! But just because you can travel somewhere, doesn't mean you should. While it may be safe to travel to some locations in the coming months, others may take much longer to recover.

What it does

We have created a city-by-city search that shows the user both local attractions and local covid-19 statistics. This way, travelers can see the risks and rewards of their trip in one place.

How we built it

  • Designed and Implemented RESTful web service employing Flask framework
  • Implemented the frontend using JavaScript while UI was designed with Figma. In order to quickly integrate the * design into production code, we use Anima to export the HTML and CSS
  • Implemented the backend using python, node.js, and Covid Act Now API
  • Handled both XML as well as JSON HTTP requests and hosted web service on GCP

Challenges we ran into

  • The most challenging task was to select a relevant API and then manipulate the data as per our requirement
  • Deploying the app to Gcloud is also a bit challenging. However, we got the static site up for our judges in the very few last minutes of the hackathon

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We were able to deploy a working web service in less than 24 hours while working in a team of 4 people where we have created a city-by-city search that shows the user both local attractions and local covid-19 statistics
  • We're proud to have created functioning test cases for our idea in only 24 hours. It will help travelers to see the risks and rewards of their trip in one place. We think this idea could be expanded and be very helpful to travelers
  • Collaborating through different time zones (4 of them)

What we learned

  • We learned the basic design and workflow of how to host a website through Google cloud Platform. For a static website, it only takes 5 minutes to deploy to GCP which is amazing
  • Also, the technical challenges involved helped us to understand and learn many new concepts which might help big time in the future
  • Plus this project showed us how to develop an idea from start to end
  • Also, we learned a lot about APIs and web design as well as how Covid-19 data is tracked and used for research purposes
  • Interestingly, it is helpful to use frames on Figma

What's next for Post-Pandemic Travel

  • Currently, this webservice is application for the county areas in United States. Given more time, this functionality could be expanded to other countries as well (world-level)
  • We also want to expand the recommendation for tourism locations to improve client satisfaction
