The Fitness-n-Wellness for all is a programme designed to fuse fun and enjoyment, through Sports and recreational Physical activities for mindfulness and human conservation following the Covid-19 crisis. During the lockdown period, family members were able to spend more time together, but it also implied idleness, binge eating and overconsumption of TV or any redundant activities. At the same time, public access to sports and physical activities were either banned or reduced. This programme is set up with the intention to bring the family and community together as a response to the dire consequences this pandemic has on their physical and mental health. The programme also aims at the restoration of trust and optimism in communal life and social bonding through physical activities. Aim of the project: To restore the confidence of embracing sports and physical activity following the pandemic crisis faced worldwide.

Key Objectives:

  1. Safely engage in Physical and recreational activities in a view of recreating a sense of community and active interaction

  2. Rebuild a sense of normalcy and social inclusion through group participation and synergy

  3. Offer opportunities for individuals (including those with Special needs) to restore themselves so as to maintain their mental, socio-emotional, and physical wellbeing.

Mode of operation: Both live and virtual. The activities are communicated via various media such as Facebook, Zoom (if in some cases people need to registered themselves for the activities), WhatsApp’s, SMS, etc. all sessions are video recorded and streamline on YouTube or any other means. There will be a main participant that will lead the group to ensure coordination and smooth running of the activity. The project also aims at outreaching people from vulnerable communities where space needs to be re-appropriated for a safer neighbourhood as well as decreasing idleness and social ills.

Team: Bharutty RAMGUTTEE and Meda Charisma THONDEE Country: Mauritius Specialised in Education for All The setting: Ideally the project aims that people meet on their rooftops [given they are flat and squared surfaces with reasonable heights and sufficient protection from harm], for those whose physical mobility are restricted, they can still follow the sessions virtually. In this respect the programme also considers public spaces which are at the reach of people, the street, public beaches, balconies, courtyards, public parks, parking spaces found in the vicinity, and banks of river can be reconverted, among others. The aim is to create social bonding through physical exercises among a maximum of people within the community.

Preparation for the activities: Cartoon boxes can be cut 3*3 meters and placed on the ground as an indication of movement boundaries per individual. Alternatively, a circle can be drawn with chalk or pebbles can be used to mark the boundaries. The aim is to maintain social distancing and ensure the individual is safe while performing the activity.

Tools for the activities: 0.5/ 1lt Water bottles filled with water or sand or pebbles or salt or dry beans can be used as lifts; ropes; yoga mats or carton boxes, or any relevant household appliances as support equipment at the reach of the individual.

Logistic support and resources:

  1. A coach (alternate coach according to ability and interest of people in the group/ community but the latter should choose people with some competencies and knowledge who can empower participants through a cascading effect). The idea is that the coach can lead the session smoothly for approximately 45 minutes.

  2. Assistants to video record and live stream the sessions. The programme can also be broadcasted on national TV to sensitize people that sports and physical activities can be fun, easy, accessible, cheap and community led.

  3. Event manager who will be responsible to communicate the sessions to participants

• The picture above some exemplars of Roof top views where individuals/ small groups [family/friends] can join for the activity • Everyone should be able to have enough space and boundaries must be set to protect individuals from harm and hazards • Everyone must be able to see each other from their roof top and actively engage in the exercises • Those with reduced mobility can still interact virtually through live streaming
