Inspiration

I was inspired by the fact that I can not make sense of the Portuguese government websites as an immigrant from California and that there is no single good website/app to navigate to all the others based on my needs

What it does

Shows a searchable directory of government services and allows you to find the one you need to go to digitally/physically for the next step whatever task you need to get done

How we built it

Started by researching if similar apps existed and referencing a much worse designed version of what I built. I used Google AI Studio to prototype the design, then used Claude to convert the output code to Kotlin, then used Google Gemini in Android Studio to polish the details

Challenges we ran into

Government services in Portugal are actually a lot more complicated than what AI tried to design. It was honestly a struggle with my understanding of what actually existed and what visitors were going to look for to explain to AI how this was supposed to work. AI kept trying to add unnecessary features and UX. A lot of the time was actually spent REMOVING the overbuilt interfaces/functionality it kept creating and recreating. This was also my first time personally implementing IAPs :)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is an app I needed personally as an immigrant to Portugal. Reguardless of whether I win I will be using this app myself as well as the prior AI app I created with AI called NIF Portugal for showing retailers my PT Tax ID #

What we learned

There's way more government services and physical service locations in a country of 10-11 million people than I was aware of as a 2.5 year resident of Porto, Portugal

What's next for Portugal Government Services Navigator

I feel honestly that if people use the app and RevenueCat coffe tips brings me revenue then it will pay for my small business to continue to update it as government services and their contact information changes. As a recent immigrant I am aware that for example here in Portugal AIMA is a very new branch of the government dealing with immigration. So there will be other government changes that will need to be reflected in the app.
