What it does Portfolio_404 is a creative twist on a personal portfolio website that turns the idea of the classic “404 Page Not Found” error into a storytelling and design opportunity. Instead of showing a standard error page, users are taken on an interactive experience that humorously walks them through projects, skills, and personal tidbits—making the “page not found” the perfect place to actually find something unique.
How we built it We built Portfolio_404 using a modern web stack:
Frontend: React with Tailwind CSS for a responsive, stylish UI
Animations: Framer Motion to add delightful transitions and micro-interactions
Hosting: Deployed on Vercel for quick, reliable performance
We also designed custom illustrations and glitchy visual effects to enhance the "broken-but-not-really" vibe of the experience.
Challenges we ran into Striking the right balance between humor and usability was trickier than expected—we didn’t want to confuse users too much.
Animating glitch effects without sacrificing accessibility or performance was a challenge, especially on mobile.
Designing an engaging UX that still fulfilled the purpose of a traditional portfolio took a lot of iterations and feedback.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We created a portfolio that actually surprises people—it's not every day a 404 page leaves a lasting impression.
Managed to make it both functional and fun, while staying true to our personal brand.
Pulled off a fully responsive, interactive site with clean design and snappy load times.
What we learned UX can be unconventional as long as it's intentional.
Even “error” concepts can be turned into creative storytelling tools.
The value of early user feedback—it helped us steer away from confusion and toward clarity.
Polishing animations takes time, but the payoff is real in terms of user engagement.
What's next for Portfolio_404 Adding a hidden “easter egg” mode with mini-games and more playful features.
Incorporating dark/light mode toggles with glitchy transition effects.
Turning it into a theme/template for other designers who want to break the mold with their own portfolios.
