Introduction

This project was part of the orientation hackathon where we improved the pre-existing template to make it better and add multiple features to it. Some issues were added to guide us but we added many more issues to improve the website even further.

What it does

This is a portfolio website which can help you showcase your projects, your education and work experience. The new features let you add your resume, recommendations, bio and social media links among so many other features! You can check out our final website here:

My contributions

I worked on a bunch of PRs. I am listing them below:-

  1. Adding a project modal - https://github.com/MLH-Fellowship/pod-3.1.3-portfolio/pull/36
  2. Adding a 'scroll to top' feature - https://github.com/MLH-Fellowship/pod-3.1.3-portfolio/pull/53
  3. Adding social media links to the project modal - https://github.com/MLH-Fellowship/pod-3.1.3-portfolio/pull/64

I worked with some issues and contributed to a few of them.

  1. Adding social media links to the project card - https://github.com/MLH-Fellowship/pod-3.1.3-portfolio/issues/61
  2. Adding a toggle to switch between modal view and normal view - https://github.com/MLH-Fellowship/pod-3.1.3-portfolio/issues/46. Discussed and realized that it might not be the best feature addition at the moment and worked on something else.
  3. Pointed out a bug in the dark mode issue leading to a new issue and improvement of the dark mode feature - https://github.com/MLH-Fellowship/pod-3.1.3-portfolio/issues/48
  4. Worked out on this issue - https://github.com/MLH-Fellowship/pod-3.1.3-portfolio/issues/4
  5. Had a discussion on this issue and then made a PR based on it - https://github.com/MLH-Fellowship/pod-3.1.3-portfolio/issues/47
  6. Started a review on this issue. Couldn't continue after a while since the PR was submitted. Would love to discuss more and work on the README.

Pod Contributions

I worked with a number of members to help with the git issues and conflicts. I also helped out some of the pod members on project set up and bundler as well.

Challenges we ran into

Day 1 was just spent figuring out the project structure and figuring out CSS styling. I was quite overwhelmed on day 1 because I have never worked on stuff like this before.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Merging 3 pull requests and learning how to collaborate with a global team effectively!

What we learned

Honestly, I have learned so much this week including CSS, Jekyll, Bootstrap, JS and solving git conflicts in general. I started from scratch and now have a website I can call my own. This was quite awesome!
