I have an echo dot at home and it’s great but I wanted to build a skill that would enable it to be more useful in the workplace.

I work at a UK based software startup, we use many different services for reporting on aspects of the business such as finance, customer satisfaction etc. My idea was to build a platform that can easily integrate these services with Alexa so me and the rest of the team could obtain information without the need to go to many different websites.

To get any use from the skill the user needs to link services to their porter account which meant I had to build a web interface to go along with the skill. The web interface can be found here www.yoporter.com

I built the skill using Python / Django with help from this open source library https://github.com/pycontribs/django-alexa which was really useful :). The whole service is hosted on a Amazon EC2 instance.

In future releases I’ll be adding more integrations and also the ability to run a flash briefing style summary from all your connected API’s.
