Inspiration
We got inspired by the Game Dev. Workshop offered here in the HACKMESA event and we decided to make a simple runner game. When it came to deciding the aesthetics of the game we decided that it would be interesting to make it so each portal takes Portal Boy to different areas from, space, to underwater, and the sky.
What it does
Our game is a simple runner game that has a simple loop of dodge, forward, and repeat. It's purpose is to be fun and repayable to attempt to beat the time it took you to complete your previous run.
How we built it
We used the engine cocrea.world which is similar to Scratch which uses JavaScript blocks to build games. We didn't utilize tools outside of the engine, except for itch.io to acquire free sprites which we used as the moving obstacles.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge we ran into was having to scrap our original idea due to time constraints. Our original idea was a text based game meant to follow a boy on his journey or overcoming grief, as he interacts with characters that are experiencing the different stages of grief. This is obviously very different from what we ended up developing. However as we mentioned earlier our final idea was inspired by the Game Dev Workshop, in which we realized that the time constraints would not allow us to create a game like that without turning it more into a movie than an actual game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
After finishing our project we are proud of having an actual demo regardless of the time constraint, and the fact we are beginners in both coding and attending a HACKATHON.
What we learned
After finishing the project we learned how to use the Engine Scratch, and Cocrea. As mentioned above our group was almost entirely unfamiliar with Game Dev. and Code so we learned everything from the basics of JavaScript and development.
What's next for Portal.Boy.Run
There is probably nothing next for Portal Boy Run, unless we decide to continue developing it, and add more obstacles and perhaps make more levels. However Portal Boy Run might have the potential to become something bigger, perhaps using what we built today as only a minigame inside of a game on why Portal Boy is running through portals to begin with.
