Inspiration
In 2015, when earthquakes destroyed parts of Nepal, helicopters were one of the most important form of transportation for disaster relief. However, appropriate landing sites were difficult to find.
What it does
This service uses elevation topographical data to find appropriate landing sites for helicopters, using criteria such as maximum gradient and a minimum flat area.
How I built it
MATLAB was the tool used to find the points which fit the criteria for an appropriate landing site.
Challenges I ran into
It was difficult finding topographical data on a granular level appropriate for our applications.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Finding an adequate solution to the problem.
What I learned
Finding the appropriate data is difficult.
What's next for Portable Helicopter Landing Zones for Disaster Relief
Obtaining the right data on a fine scale to use in our code.
