Before going any further, I would like to clarify that I am Logan Pinter.
Inspiration
Nearly everyone who has used YouTube has wondered why certain videos seem to be wildly popular, without any particular reason, and thus, we attempted to answer this question.
What it does
Although we had initially planned for this program to have far greater functionality, the current build of this program simply gathers the tags used in the 200 most popular videos on YouTube according to the YouTube Data API, and allows the user to input a series of tags they think might be popular. The program then generates a score based on how often these tags appear in the 200 most popular videos, roughly indicating how popular those tags may be.
How we built it
We attempted to build an Android app, and links have been provided to its source code and APK, however, the author is currently unreachable, and I cannot easily comment on it. The program gathering the tags of the most popular videos and prompting the user for a list of tags was written entirely in python, and makes use of the YouTube Data API.
Challenges we ran into
Due to a series of communication issues, some of us having to leave and re-form a team, and one key team member being called into work abruptly, this program, unfortunately, had to be dramatically reduced in scope.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite relative inexperience and extreme communication issues, we managed to push something out, which is certainly better than nothing.
What we learned
Communication Skills are a need.
What's next for popularity predictor
If any of the team is interested, we may continue to add more functionality.
