Inspiration

This project is inspired by the society platform that UNSW currently uses named Rubric. We've found it pretty slow, and sometime the page breaks, and the search function cannot search for individual societies but instead only events.

What it does

Popular does what Rubric does but more and better with a more modern designed and streamlined user interactions and an actual usable search functionality. What Rubric doesn't have is that Popular allows you to add friends and shows you what events your friends are going to.

How we built it

We built Popular with Next.js 14 App Router for the frontend, Supabase for authentication, database, and row-level security, PostgreSQL for data storage, and Tailwind CSS for styling. Authentication is handled via Google OAuth through Supabase. Role-based access student vs club admin, and member vs admin vs owner within a society is enforced both at the UI level and at the database level through RLS policies. We designed the website and the platform using Figma.

Challenges we ran into

  • Time management: we were low on time due to the scale of this project, and if we had more time we could make the demo video better and cinematic.
  • Functionalities: making these functionalities work were huge tasks for us and we had to all cooperate to fix issues eg type errors, build errors, function errors and functionalities weren't behaving as intended.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really proud of being able to make an MVP that does what the current platform that UNSW uses for society management in this short amount of time. We are proud of the designs, the execution and the final product that we got, and the amount of invaluable experiences we obtained through this hackathon.

What we learned

We learnt to collaborate as a team! More to that there is a lot of technical knowledge we've gained through developing this project whether it is using the programming language or deploying or connecting it to a database. We brainstormed and designed the actual project and made it come true as an MVP that everyone can use.

What's next for Popular

We would add more corporate functionalities that relate to admin management for the societies for society management team to gain more insights on how they are performing, specifically alongside the interests of UNSW and ARC. We could also add finance management for societies as well as elections and voting. We could also refine the design of the overall platform. If it gets more attention we will make separate databases for different universities, as well as making sure that only people that require admin authorization can get those authorizations.
