Inspiration

We were inspired by the "social gap" on modern college campuses. Even though students live inches away from each other in dorms, they often feel like total strangers to their next-door neighbors. We wanted to fix this using "Digital Nostalgia." By bringing back the aesthetic and exploration of Poptropica, a game that captured the hearts of millions, we realized we could create a safe, low-pressure way for our generation to break the ice and start exploring their real-world "islands" together.

What it does

PoptropiCollege is a mobile social app that turns campus life into a virtual adventure. Users sign up as students or RAs in classic Poptropica style. They can own a virtual dorm room to show off their interests, browse through others on your floor to see who lives down the hall, and visit "Campus Islands" themed around food, sports, or studying. The app allows users to host or join real-life events, like a study session on "Library Island," and track their journey on a social timeline.

How we built it

The app was designed entirely in Figma, focusing on a "Web 2.0" glossy aesthetic to stay true to the 2000s vibe. Since the original game was taken down with Flash Player, we sourced and repurposed visual assets from Google Images, meticulously editing them to fit a mobile UI. We built the interface by layering complex gradients and inner shadows to recreate the "bubbly" text and buttons. We also integrated modern UX patterns from apps like Instagram and Snapchat to ensure the navigation felt intuitive for today's users.

Challenges we ran into

None of us came from design backgrounds, so one of the biggest hurdles as new designers was translating a 2D side-scrolling browser game into a functional vertical mobile app. We had to figure out how to keep the "exploration" feeling alive without the mechanics of the original game. Another challenge was asset sourcing; because the official game servers are offline, we had to hunt for high-quality archives of character bases and icons, often having to manually "vectorize" them in Figma to make them look crisp on modern screens.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of how well we captured the heart of "Poptropica". Seeing the final "bubbly" UI feel so authentic to our childhood memories was a huge win. We also succeeded in creating a clear aesthetic that feels professional yet stays within the fun, cartoony world we built. Successfully turning a "dead" game into a living social utility was our biggest achievement.

What we learned

We learned that nostalgia is a powerful tool that lowers social anxiety by making a new environment feel familiar. We also gained deep experience in Figma, learning how to use masking, components, prototyping, and complex styling to make our app feel alive.

What's next for PoptropiCollege

Next, we want to design the catalog and customization pages, as we found those to be a struggle to implement due to the overwhelming lack of assets. As a team founded on technical backgrounds, even if we might not be able to use Poptropica officially, we feel that we can make this app a reality. We’d love to see PoptropiCollege (in a new iteration) become the official onboarding tool for universities to help every student feel like they’ve found their island.
