Inspiration 🧠

Our inspiration stemmed from the love of cinema and the communal joy of sharing movie experiences. We realized that while there are platforms for rating movies, there was a gap in personalization and the ability to journal one's own cinematic journey. We wanted to create a space where movie lovers could not only rate films but also keep track of what they've watched, curate lists, and share their thoughts and recommendations with a community of like-minded cinephiles. ✨🎞️📽️

What it does ☁️

Our website serves as a comprehensive platform for movie enthusiasts to rate movies, create personalized watchlists, and journal their ratings on each film. It's designed to be a personal cinema diary, where users can track the movies they rated, explore recommendations based on their tastes and see a personal movie list of their ratings.

How we built it ⚒️

We built the platform using a stack of cutting-edge technologies and blockchain tools. The front end is developed with React, offering a responsive and intuitive user interface. The backend is based on smart contracts using solidity and ganache to deploy these smart contracts. These components used, work together to create a decentralized application (dApp) that is both powerful and user-friendly.

Challenges we ran into 🌄

Integrating blockchain technology into a user-friendly movie journaling platform presented unique challenges. Ensuring seamless interaction between the React front end and the Ethereum blockchain required meticulous attention to detail, especially for handling asynchronous calls and managing state with blockchain data. We are also beginners so we had a hard time understanding blockchain in general. Overcoming these technical hurdles was a crucial learning experience for our team.

Accomplishments that we're proud of ✅

We are proud that we are more familiar with blockchain as well as Web3 and solidity which makes the connexion of contracts with the frontend. These technologies were hard to understand and our team managed to research a lot about them in the time given.

What we learned ❓

This project deepened our understanding of blockchain technology's capabilities and complexities, especially in the context of creating user-centered applications. We learned the intricacies of smart contract development and the challenges of implementing a token-based economy.

What's next for Popcorn Picks 🍿

Future integrations:

AI-powered recommendations which integrate artificial intelligence to refine the platform's recommendation engine, offering even more personalized movie suggestions based on users' watching habits, reviews, and interactions.
Token utility expansion in which we would develop additional uses for the platform's token, such as accessing premium content, voting on platform decisions, or participating in exclusive events, to increase its value and utility within the ecosystem.
Make the website more costumizable for the user.
NFT Integration in which we would implement Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) to allow users to own, trade, and sell their reviews, lists, or any unique movie-related content they create. This could add a new dimension to user engagement and investment in the platform.
