Inspiration
This project was inspired by a similar creation called pop-up golf by Alastair Low. We wanted to recreate the projected effect but with more charm, a different type of game and different lighting.
What it does
Projector displays game onto pop-up book and creates a platformer.
How we built it
Physical psuedo-hardware with cardboard, laptop running Unity and a personal projector.
Challenges we ran into
The projector needs to be perfectly aligned to create the effect.
What we learned
Creating water and light effects, thinking outside of the box (literally!)
What's next for Pop-Up Platformer
This pop-up platformer emerged from the creative idea of merging a projected screen with a handcrafted pop-up book, featuring physical props as collidable objects and obstacles embedded within its pages. To achieve this captivating effect, we opted for a cast of 8 light-based characters, effectively creating the illusion of a theater with the projector serving as the spotlight.
Development Process:
- In the Unity engine, we began by crafting a physical mock-up sketch of the level design.
- We meticulously gathered, edited, and even created assets to populate our unique world.
- Unity's physics system was finely tuned to seamlessly handle object collision, interaction, and gravity.
- Rigorous testing and thorough debugging brought the final product to life.
- Lastly, we optimized the game for a flawless demo presentation.
