Inspiration
I’ve always loved fast, satisfying “pop” style games, and I wanted to bring that same energy to Reddit in a way that feels social and replayable. Emoji Roulette was inspired by turning simple emoji interactions into a fun mini-game that people can jump into quickly and keep coming back to.
What it does
Emoji Roulette is a quick-reaction emoji game built for Reddit. Players spin through random emoji outcomes and try to hit the right moments to score points, build streaks, and beat their best runs. It’s designed to be easy to start, fun to replay, and engaging enough to spark friendly competition in communities.
How we built it
I built Emoji Roulette as a Devvit web app with a full-stack TypeScript architecture:
- Frontend: Phaser + Vite for responsive game rendering and gameplay logic
- Backend: Devvit serverless runtime (Node.js) with Hono
Challenges we ran into
My biggest challenges were:
- Making the game feel polished and visually satisfying
- Balancing UX so gameplay is simple for new players but still rewarding
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Shipping a playable, end-to-end game experience on Reddit
- Turning an initial concept into a working product in hackathon time
What we learned
This project helped us level up quickly with:
- Devvit web app development and Reddit platform integration
- Designing around performance and UX constraints in iframe-based apps
What's next for Emoji Roulette
