Inspiration
Letters and official correspondence can often seem very difficult to understand, especially for those who are unfamiliar with administrative language or are short on time. Ponte was created to alleviate this difficulty.
What it does
Its goal is to analyze a communication, explain it in simple terms, and highlight the required actions, deadlines, costs, and necessary documents. It makes complex bureaucratic documents easier to understand through interactive features.
How we built it
I used React and TypeScript for the interface, Node.js and Express for the backend, and PDF.js for text extraction. AI analysis runs through api OpenRouter, with server side validation of responses and quotations. I also used AI coding tools to help write and refine the code during development.
Challenges we ran into
Handling ambiguous dates, missing information, and unreliable AI responses was very challenging. I added checks for quotations, dates, and amounts, and made uncertainty visible..... Ponte also flags missing information and referenced documents that have not been provided.... for example, when a communication mentions an attachment that the user has not uploaded.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I built a working document-to-checklist flow with source references, interactive questions and a responsive interface that works on desktop and mobile.
What we learned
I have learned that in this case a good AI prompt alone isn't enough to provide clear explanations. Is also important to verify sources, careful validation, and design an interface that's easy to understand.
What's next for Ponte
The next step is to improve multilingual support and test Ponte with a wider range of real documents. These tests will help me understand what still needs improving before a public launch. The goal is to help people understand the letter in front of them and know what to do next. Thank you for reading.
