Inspiration

Many people around the world visit or live in Hawaii. A lot of these people do not know the local customs and traditions, not being aware of how what they are doing impacts those customs, traditions, and Hawaii’s environment. We plan to integrate these customs into a game that helps inform people who are unfamiliar with the local customs here in Hawaii, through questionnaires and also some fun games. Both will reward Pono Points (provided by DLNR or DOFAW) that are redeemable for certain products, services, etc. at local businesses or DLNR facilities.

What it does

Pono Points is going to be made similar to the popular game Pokemon GO. In Pokemon GO, there are these stations called pokestops, which supply the user with essential items such as pokeballs. Using that idea, we decided to add in our own pokestop, the ponostops. Ponostops will be all across different places, more specifically those with the most strict customs. Ponostops will provide information of that certain place, list the customs, traditions, do’s and don'ts, neighboring people’s expectations, and more. Afterwards, the app will have a questionnaire on the information given, then the user will be rewarded their Pono Points. Lastly for tourists, once the user begins to leave the area, the app will notify the user of many other destinations that are popular nearby.

How we built it

We constructed this website through the use of our knowledge on HTML, CSS, and a little bit of Java. First of all, we needed to know and learn to use google maps and other GPS code to be able to use them for our own needs. Then use that knowledge to put down tourists locations and then start making the game and quizzes at each of these locations. Also creating a counter for the amount of points they get for each right question or game.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges that we ran into were being unable to code the game due to lack of knowledge with the other coding languages (i.e. C++, C#, and Java). This was our main challenge because we were forced to change our app into a website. It was really unfortunate but in order to continue with the HACC we had to make our concept simpler for us in order to code it. Another challenge we faced was

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Accomplishments that we’re proud of is being able to come up with a decent idea quickly and that we are going to transition and finish the code as soon as possible.

What we learned

We learned that as novice coders, we should make our concept simpler so that the coding aspect wouldn’t be a barrier that would interfere with the project. We also learned that we should do a better job of tracking deadlines so that we wouldn’t be rushing like what we are now.

What's next for Pono Points

What’s next for our group is to improve on how we are able to implement and make it more interesting to use while keeping to our original goal of educating tourists
