Inspiration

Living with ADHD in a country where the treatment medications are illegal means every single day is an uphill battle to begin tasks and sustain concentration. I found out that the Pomodoro Technique and breaking tasks into manageable intervals help with managing ADHD and make it less hard to start working, and background sounds and lofi music help me not get distracted by the noisy environment I work in. But going to youtube to play Lofi music is full of distractions and ads.

What it does

PomoUno is more than just a Pomodoro timer, it's a complete productivity ecosystem designed for students, professionals, and people with ADHD. Featuring intelligent task management with spaced repetition, wellness-focused breaks, progress tracking with stats and calendar views, plus customizable background noise and lofi music to help you stay focused. Build healthy habits while you work and learn.

How we built it

This project taught me as much about development process as it did about building productivity tools. I started development with Nextjs and firebase without creating proper specifications because I didn’t know how to use Kiro Specs properly, which resulted in significant trial and error throughout the build process. The experience highlighted the importance of planning and selecting the appropriate tech stack from the beginning. These challenges, while frustrating at times, provided invaluable learning opportunities. For the next iteration, I'll be rebuilding using KIro Spec with AWS Amplify or Supabase to create a more robust foundation.

Challenges we ran into

AI-assisted coding is incredibly powerful when used thoughtfully. The key is maintaining active oversight, reviewing every piece of generated code and understanding its functionality. Without this discipline, your codebase becomes an incomprehensible black box. As a solo developer, I used to spend days stuck on complex problems. Now AI helps me solve issues faster while simultaneously expanding my understanding, accelerating both my learning and development process. Moving forward, I will be more active in reviewing and understanding all AI-generated code before approving it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building my dream productivity app in such a short timeframe and watching tens of people use it daily fills me with pride.

What we learned

This project taught me invaluable lessons about both technical development and planning. I learned the critical importance of proper planning and specifications before diving into code. Working with Kiro showed me the balance between leveraging automation and maintaining code comprehension. Most importantly, I discovered that building for a personal need (managing ADHD) creates authentic solutions that resonate with others facing similar challenges. The experience reinforced that the best products come from solving real problems you deeply understand.

What's next for PomoUno

I'm planning to introduce animated study companions, virtual characters that will work alongside users, making the productivity journey more engaging and less isolating. Beyond that, I'm developing advanced features, and deeper analytics to help users understand their productivity trends. The goal is to evolve PomoUno from a productivity tool into a comprehensive learning and work companion that grows with each user's needs.
