Inspiration
Sara’s mom is a special education teacher. When classes moved online, her mom found it challenging to keep the attention of her students, especially those who had ADHD or attention deficit disorders. We were inspired to create a tool to help students focus on their work during the school day.
What it does
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method where users set a timer for 25 minutes, work on a task, and take a 5 minute break when the 25 minutes is up. This is one Pomodoro. Every 4 Pomodoros, users take a longer break, usually 15-30 minutes. Our team modified the Pomodoro Technique and made it more suitable for students in school. Our Pomodoro Timer consists of a Chrome extension (viewable by students) and a website that teachers can use to monitor student progress. Instead of a timer counting down in front of the student, virtual rewards appear on the screen every 5 minutes. When 25 minutes is reached, students can watch a fun, educational video (chosen by the teacher) as their reward.
How we built it
We used HTML and JavaScript to create a Google Chrome extension and an accompanying website that educators can use to monitor student progress.
Challenges we ran into
No one on our team had prior experience with JavaScript or HTML so we had to overcome a large learning curve. We also had issues with getting our timer to function correctly, getting the pictures to appear at set interval times, and embedding videos in our timer.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
Our team was able to learn JavaScript extremely quickly and use it to build our Pomodoro timer. In our Chrome extension, users could set a goal time they wanted to work for, and we were able to include a graph that showed a user’s progress towards that goal time each time the user started and stopped the timer.
What we learned
We gained a basic understanding of HTML and JavaScript. We also learned how to style HTML documents using CSS, both in-line as well as externally.
What's next for .pom; Timer for Students
We would like to further develop the website necessary for educators to track each student’s Pomodoro timer. We want to add a sign in function for teachers and give them the ability to modify the rewards released every 25 minutes as needed. This website would also display data about time spent working, individual progress, reward video watched, and participating students.
