Our project was inspired by the Pomodoro Technique. Our user-interface design was also inspired by the website We were also inspired by the theme of HackDavis 2021, which is for the betterment of social good. We understand that due to COVID-19, we are spending much more time indoors. When spending so much time and taking care of all of our responsibilities in one space, it can be quite overwhelming and harder to differentiate time to work from time to relax, especially for students. Therefore, using pomocon can help everyone take back control of our time and use it efficiently.

What it does

pomocon is a website that acts as a Pomodoro timer. It allows users to select between a 25 minute work interval or 5/10/15 minute breaks. pomocon displays the time interval the user selects and shows the exact time the interval will be done. The time interval is displayed in a aesthetically pleasing circle, which depletes with time accordingly. When the timer is up, an audio notification plays to let the user know that they completed a Pomodoro or that their break is over. pomocon also keeps track of the user's total time for their session on pomocon. The user will be able to see their work time, break time, total time, completed Pomodoros, and efficiency.

How we built it

We first designed the user-interface using Sketch. Once we were happy with how our project visually looked, we built our project using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap, and SVG. We heavily used Glitch to collaborate in real-time and we were fortunate enough to be able to work in person as well. We also used Visual Studio Code (Alyssa) and Atom (Michael) as a environment to build our project as well.

Challenges we ran into

Since this was our first hackathon we did not know what to expect. The hardest component we implemented was the timer's circle depleting with time. This required using SVG, which neither of us had experience with.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We made sure that our website was responsive and friendly across desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile. We're also very proud of the timer animation, as that was one of our challenges as stated above. We are also proud of ourselves because as we mentioned before, this was our first hackathon. We had a lot of fun and enhanced our web development skills. We look forward to participating in future hackathons.

What we learned

We were pleasantly surprised by our own abilities. We both suffer from imposter syndrome, thus we had some self-doubt, but we were able to overcome it together. We learned that we can do whatever we put our minds set to.

What's next for pomocon

We just hope that pomocon can help other students like ourselves overcome the difficulties of managing school, work, and any other responsibilities, especially during the pandemic. We know firsthand how difficult and overwhelming it can be.
