Inspiration

We understand that humans and pet have a special bonding and pets are as good as a dear family member. We know firsthand how difficult losing a pet can be and how overwhelming loss of your loved one can be. Just like we celebrate the birth of a loved one, we would like to commemorate the death of a loved one. As the world runs out of burial space, NFTs are the new option for memorializing our loved ones. This got us thinking to have a digital burial and memorial for pets where one can reserve their pets resting place, perform memorial services, offer digital flowers, and have their family and community also visit and pay respects.

What it does

PolyPetCemetery is a Polygon Blockchain backed 100 graves virtual NFT cemetery, where each grave can be bought and individualized as per your pets.

We built a Blockchain based application where we can see available cemeteries, connect our wallet, buy a memorial NFT and show events around it. The NFTs are a key to your pet’s personal memorial, where you can safely display memories of your loved pet. As the owner of the PolyPetCemetery Grave NFT, you have complete autonomy over what memories you share and who can visit the memorial hall.

Our Cemeteries

With the help of Google maps, we are showing locations where cemeteries are situated. Once you click on the location of the desired cemetery, it will take you to the screen which will show details of that cemetery and a list of graves that belong there. It will also show you whether that grave is sold or available. You can select any grave, check its details and if available, can buy using MetaMask account.

If you are an owner and visiting grave, then you can edit details of grave such as pet name, pet description, pet image, death time and date. Also, you can create events such as memorials for your pet.

Memorials

This screen will show you the list of events based on its categories:

Upcoming: This will show events which are scheduled in future.
Past: This will show completed events.
Ongoing: This will show present events.
Cancelled: This will show events which are cancelled by the owner.

Connect Wallet

Clicking on it will open MetaMask popup on browser and ask you to login. If you do not have MetaMask extension, it will take you to the screen where you can download extension and then connect.

How we built it

Technologies Used: Polygon Blockchain, Mumbai Test net, React, GraphQL, NodeJS. Each Grave NFT is created using ERC-721 token built using Solidity and use IPFS to store their images and metadata.

Challenges we ran into

We faced challenges getting data directly from Blockchain to show graves on the dashboard, so we used GraphQL APIs as mediator for accessing data from Blockchain for grave details.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have used Zustand and react-query for app level state management. With react-query, GraphQL implementation becomes easy. It's lightweight and easy to implement as compared to all other tools like Redux and Redux-Saga. Zustand store even supports session storage which results in code reduction.

What we learned

We have learned new ways to manage state in application with minimal code which will improve application performance.

What's next for PolyPetCemetery

At present we have offered 100 graves in select locations, we could open it up for more global usage. Also, the plan is to take it full fledged on the Metaverse where one can buy their own virtual land in the PolyPetCemetery park, all PolyPetCemetery NFT holders can get a voucher for their land. We can do much more allowing personal memories of the pets be associated such as text, audio, video etc. In the Metaverse, anyone everywhere can visit the grave, grieve, and offer virtual memorial services, digital flowers etc.
