Project Story

What Inspired This Project

This project was born from a deep curiosity about the intersection of language, identity, and technology. I've always believed that language is more than communication — it's a bridge to culture, perspective, and belonging. With that in mind, I set out to build something that didn’t just process language, but celebrated it.

How I Built It

The project began with research: diving into multilingual NLP frameworks, assessing open-source tools, and sketching out the user experience. I chose technologies that aligned with Polyglot’s vision of a more linguistically inclusive web, prioritizing modularity, accessibility, and cross-language compatibility.

From there, I developed core features iteratively — testing and refining each component to ensure it worked well across diverse languages. I focused heavily on making the tool intuitive to use while maintaining a backend that could scale and adapt to new linguistic inputs.

What I Learned

Working on this project expanded my understanding of computational linguistics and multilingual UX design. I learned how subtle design choices can either welcome or exclude, depending on language and cultural context. I also gained a deeper appreciation for the technical challenges of building tools that work equally well across scripts, grammars, and alphabets.

Challenges I Faced

One of the hardest parts was balancing linguistic nuance with generalizability. Supporting multiple languages meant accounting for everything from right-to-left text to non-Latin character sets, often requiring custom solutions. Another challenge was maintaining a clean, responsive UI while integrating complex backend logic. Through countless iterations, I found creative ways to simplify complexity without losing functionality.
