Inspiration

We were inspired to build this product after seeings years of posts on snapchat saying "going to the bay, Friday at 4pm, 3 seats, dm", over and over and over. We built this app so there would be a centralized place where students can post and find people giving rides, all with the knowledge that these are real, verified Cal Poly students.

What it does

After logging in and verifying your email, you can post a ride with the starting point, destination, date, time, and number of available seats. Then, users can browse available rides to find the one perfectly suited for their needs. After someone joins the ride, the driver can view who is along for the ride and plan for the trip ahead.

How we built it

We used typescript, React Native, and Expo SDK 57 for our frontend, and supabase for our backend, alongside a fair amount of Codex and copilot.

Challenges we ran into

We initially wanted to create an app where roommates can plan chores and shoppings lists together, but after some discussion, we decided to pivot. In the production of Poly Passengers, the biggest challenge we ran into was getting supabase set up so we could verify emails.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were proud of our ability to pivot our project after facing adversity early into the lifecycle of our initial idea. Transitioning from having to restart into making a working product we feel confident with was something to be proud about.

What we learned

We learned to be flexible and to act on our feet. We also learned how to use a new database for our backend and overcome adversity when we had troubles getting it set up.

What's next for Poly Passengers

Adding chat, adding more customization to rides, adding the ability to split an uber, and moderation
