Inspiration

The inspiration for PollenSense was from personal experiences dealing with seasonal allergies during springtime. We recognized there is a lack of easily accessible and personalized allergy information, which brought light to our idea to develop a comprehensive and inclusive mobile application that could provide real-time allergy alerts and personalized recommendations.

What it does

PollenSense is a mobile application designed to provide real-time allergy alerts and personalized recommendations for managing seasonal allergies, particularly during springtime when pollen levels are high. The app utilizes geolocation integration to offer localized pollen forecasts and personalized notifications to alert you when entering a high pollen area. It also offers allergy prevention tips and different ways to seek out help. Another app feature is a data analytics dashboard that enhances the user's ability to analyze their allergies and better protect themselves in the future.

How we built it

We developed PollenSense using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend and backend functionalities like data processing and user authentication for our sign-in page. We prioritized accessibility and compliance with standards, hosting the app on GitHub, a reliable server with continuous optimal performance. Figma was also utilized to create our app demo, ensuring a visually appealing and user-friendly design.

Challenges we ran into

We faced multiple challenges throughout the development of PollenSense.

Development of idea: Crafting a relevant yet original concept for PollenSense proved challenging. We conducted thorough research, iterated ideas, and prioritized user needs to develop a distinctive solution focused on empowering users to manage seasonal allergies effectively.

Personalization: Creating a demo and a functional website that offers personalized allergy insights based on factors like race, ethnicity, and existing health conditions necessitated meticulous attention to data privacy and ethical considerations.

Hosting and Deployment: Deploying the website and ensuring its reliability proved to be a hurdle. It took several attempts to find the right hosting provider and configure server settings correctly, guaranteeing optimal website performance and availability.

Despite these challenges, our team remained committed to delivering a high-quality and inclusive solution to help individuals effectively manage seasonal allergies and improve their well-being.

What we learned

Through the process of conceptualizing and designing PollenSense, we learned about the intricacies of seasonal allergies, including the diverse range of allergens, their effects on different demographics, and the importance of timely and accurate information in managing allergies effectively. Additionally, we gained insights into the potential of technology, such as a variety of algorithms and geolocation integration, to enhance the user experience and provide personalized solutions to ensure inclusively and diversity.

What's next for PollenSense

Our focus is on refining geolocation and external API integration for even more precise, real-time pollen data. We'll also expand our resources to offer comprehensive allergy prevention tips. Our goal remains to empower users in managing seasonal allergies effectively.
