Inspiration

With the looming threat of global warming one unintended consequence among many was the prolonged seasons for spore growth and pollen allergies. Many of our friends and family with pollen allergies have been complaining about this very quantifiable trend and it inspired us to take action and see if we could create a tool to help.

What it does

PollenPulse is a cross platform mobile application that helps provide users with detailed location-based information on pollen in their areas. Also through our jounraling and insights features, users can help log and revisit which specific allergens affected them the most and to learn more about their symptoms. Finally, the tool can also be used as a way to set medication reminders and refill reminders.

How we built it

The app is built on React Native to leverage the capabilities of cross-platform compatibility and to make it as accessible as possible to everyone. We used a Django backend to set up our backend and Postgresql as our database. We were unable to get it deployed in time but were one of our next steps.

Challenges we ran into

It was both of our first time working with React Native and Django, but it was definitely a great experience to learn these tools and frameworks a long the way. Even functionality like notifications gave us some of the greatest obstacles and challenged and it was to over come them.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As mentioned earlier, we were proud to create a project that has potential to help our friends and family at the very least. Also creating a project with tools we haven't worked with before was a fun and rewarding challenge

What we learned

We learned a lot about pollen allergies and the different species of pollen allergens along the way.

What's next for PollenPulse

Currently as college students, we had a very limited budget and worked with free trials with most of our APIs calls and services. In the future, as the project becomes more fleshed out, we hope to create a more scalable project and leverage other APIs like OpenFDA to its fullest extent to help those suffering through prolonged pollen seasons
