Inspiration

Originally MetaRock was created from an idea to scan rocks and mint them as NFTs. Our founder is an opal miner in South West Queensland and conceived of MedaRock as a means of selling digitized opals and stones in the metaverse. As the vision matured, we realized that everybody has something they can bring to the metaverse to help build it. We have been inspired by the ease of use of the remark-based NFTs and see the possibilities are limitless using the RMRK standard for NFTs.

What MedaRock does

NFTs have more uses than we can currently imagine. MedaRock is a portal into the metaverse that facilitates the digitization of 3D assets. We are empowering and equipping the community to create 3D NFTs ready to be put to work in the metaverse with a multitude of applications. We are going to build a series of interfaces that are specifically designed for each asset class with a fluid logic and intuitive UI experience.

As an opal miner seeming a disconnect between the raw material being mined out of the earth and the final product we had a desire to bring the “story” to the end-user. By combining the complete lifecycle of the gem stone as digital assets we can add value and authenticity to an item. In the example of opal jewelry the suite would include images and or video of the gem being uncovered at the site, images of the raw unpolished rock, the polishing process - the evolution, 3D scans of the polished stone, blueprints of the jewelry design, and certificates of authenticity. This would link the origins of the stone, directly and permanently to the final item/NFT. The NFT would own this suite of information.

Target markets include 3D avatars, gaming, real estate, art, real-world collectibles, architecture, engineering, and accounting to name a few.

How we built it

In the example of opal, mined by our founder in South West Queensland we began by conducting some initial experiments with simple 3D scanning software on a phone.

Raw and polished opal from the mine was then sent to a cutting-edge photogrammetry 3D scanning service to see what results could be yielded.

We collaborated with designers and coders with a keen interest in NFTs and the metaverse to build the infrastructure of our platform. Setting out into largely uncharted territory we sort to break open the use cases of the remark standard and open the door for new users to access the potential of this new technology for real-world assets.

We’ve begun building strong connections with important stakeholders in the evolution of the utility of digital assets.

Challenges we ran into

We cloned KodaDots NFT explorer with consent from KodaDot. In the process we ran into issues with the block heights and block consensus. We worked toward a solution and in resolving the issue uncovered some problems in their code which allowed us to contribute to “KodaDot in the wild” and support their team. The NFTs scan tool that we cloned works for remark 1.0 only. We are now looking into ways to build an NFT explorer that can interpret remark 2.0 NFTs.

We decided to change our name from PolkaRock to MetaRock to align ourselves better with the direction we are going in.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We formed an amazing team that is passionate and excited about paving the way for a new generation of NFTs. It's been an immensely rewarding experience to bring together great minds and ideas to build, create and explore.
