What 'problem' is solved by this approach?
The main goal of this tool is to create a stronger understanding and eventually consensus towards the rather strict measures taken. Especially with the uncertain future and duration of such measures, the tool can be a great source of information for society as a whole.
What does the solution look like?
We created a simulation which indirectly answers two questions in an accessible way:
- Why does the EU/my government do _______ ?
- Why does the EU/my government want me to _____ ?
by simulating the spread of the virus/disease in an accessible manner.
And here you can have a look at it: https://eusim.github.io
Pitch
This could be used for educating society on various educational levels. From primary schools up to graduate levels. For the #EUvsVirus Hackathon, we start with a minimum viable version.
Political dimensions
Additionally, the user friendly and easy to understand visualization of the data can be used informatively in an educational setting (e.g, in primary schools, etc).
Methodology
This tool uses a simplified model of the EU to simulate and predict the effects of multiple political policies on the spread of the but not only the COVID-19 disease.
Disclaimer and Outlook
There exist several interesting models for epidemiologic disease modeling. We want to use these to create a model which to some degree resembles the European Union. Further, we want to validate and predict the effects of political policies and potentially on the spread of this and other diseases in future epidemics.
Value
We strongly believe that education is the prior mean to tackle this and future crisis.
