Inspiration
While many of us are familiar with our nation's government structure, including positions like the president and vice president, we often overlook the governance of our own cities. Who are the individuals responsible for crucial decisions related to urban planning and infrastructure development in our cities? It's not just about the top leaders; it's about understanding the intricate web of city governance. For instance, who currently holds the position of mayor in Atlanta? Can we name the council members representing various districts within Atlanta? Surprisingly, a significant portion of the younger generation is unaware of these details. Our application is designed with the primary objective of enhancing political awareness at the city level, ensuring citizens are well-informed about their local representatives and their roles.
What it does ## How we built it
We've meticulously designed a dynamic map that showcases the various city council districts within Atlanta. To achieve this, we utilized a publicly accessible JSON file, which provided us with the precise coordinates delineating the boundaries of each district. These polygons, which we've coded and integrated into our map, serve as a visual representation of these districts. Users can interact with the map by clicking on individual districts, revealing detailed information about their respective city council district members. Furthermore, the map offers zooming capabilities, allowing users to explore at varying levels of granularity. Central to our design philosophy is the aim to amplify accessibility to political information, making it more user-friendly and informative for the general public.
At the pinnacle of our website, visitors will find a sleek navigation bar prominently featuring the Polis logo, which symbolizes our brand's commitment to transparent governance. Accompanying the logo are links that guide users to various other sections within our platform. These include the "About Us" segment, which delves into the mission and vision of our organization. Additionally, the "Political Officials" section offers comprehensive profiles and insights about local political representatives. For those keen on staying updated, our "Latest News" section brings forth the most recent developments in local politics. To ensure our users never miss an important date, the "Upcoming Elections" section provides timely reminders, complete with details about polling locations. Lastly, recognizing the value of user input, we've incorporated a "Contact" button, enabling users to propose new information or make requests for inclusion on our platform.

Embarking on the journey to learn React from its foundational basics proved to be a challenging endeavor for our team. With no prior exposure to this modern JavaScript library, we often found ourselves navigating through a maze of unfamiliar concepts, terminologies, and intricacies. As a result, we are extremely proud and satisfied with the product that we have created from scratch and the tracing and detailed diagram of all the districts in Atlanta.
What's next for POLIS
Looking ahead to our upcoming initiatives, we are committed to the continual development and enhancement of our platform. A primary focus will be the comprehensive completion of our web pages, ensuring that they are robust and provide an in-depth perspective on each political official, both incumbent and those running for office. This will be achieved through rigorous and consistent data input, keeping our information current and accurate. Additionally, we recognize the importance of fiscal transparency; therefore, we are eager to incorporate financial statistics that shed light on local government expenditures, particularly in areas like infrastructure and education. By doing so, we aim to empower citizens with knowledge about how their tax contributions are utilized, promoting accountability and informed decision-making. To ensure maximum reach and convenience for our users, we are also working towards optimizing our application for mobile devices, making it seamlessly accessible for individuals on-the-go.
